I've been giving a lot of thought to the Legendary Films' "Monsterverse", still the only really successful shared cinematic universe other than Marvel's. I already told my boss to consider me off work for this time next year for when the next film drops.
In a few years we will get the final movie of this trilogy, "Godzilla vs Kong". After that Toho takes back over. I hope Legendary really takes this theme of Nihilism to its logical conclusion. It doesn't need to be as dark as the end of Devilman. But if I had my druthers, the monsters would take back over the earth and would be the only living things on it.
If you look back at both "Godzilla 2014" and "Kong: Skull Island", the dominating theme is nihilism. Nothing the humans do matter. The monsters are going to fight and the humans can neither help nor hinder them. They are just ants crawling on the surface of the world the kaiju once ruled over.
But, you know, I'm not right in the head. Still waiting on some feedback and then I might be able to let you in on something.
#MarchForRobots ? How fun! Let me join in. I'll add #MarchForMechs .
Let's start off with Gypsy Danger, as Pacific Rim comes out March 23rd. When I first heard of this movie, I was very disinterested. It looked more like a movie about giant robots than kaiju and that didn't attract me. Then I watched it and was enthralled in the first minute. The universe feels more rich, detailed and lived in than the first Iron Man movie. Charlie Hunnam may be a charisma vacuum, but it was a watershed moment in movies for female characters, creating the Mako Mori Test. And it was a movie with a message, possibly representing the last time we could dream of America teaming with Russia and China before the burning sewage for that was the entirety of 2015 and 2016.
Now we have the sequel on the horizon, and I'm still filled with negative hope about the movie's prospects. The marketing machine keeps releasing a new clip every day to the point that I feel like I have already seen the whole movie more than any other hype machine. I'm not enticed at all by the kaiju designs and the jaegers look like rejects from an American Sentai movie.
But here, at the edge of all hope, I'll reserve my judgement until my ass is in the seat.
God dammit! I did ONE Google image search for a French maid hat and a feather duster for my door hanger art. Now every website and social media platform won't stop using data mining to shove the images in to my browsing as ads! I can't open my phone at work without fear of my co-workers seeing this and wondering what the hell is wrong with me.
I mean, you know, besides the obvious.
