This is me helping out (but not that effectively) at the daily task of splitting coconut husks near Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. There's basically a blunt axe head stuck in the ground, and you whack the coconuts down onto it to split them. You have to watch your hands! I didn't do too well at this and got demoted to scraping out the insides for pol sambol... This was the back garden area of the family I was staying with.
I got to visit the incredible Al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, the traditional home of the city's booksellers. The street runs for hundreds of metres, and it's like this all the way down! It was very busy, and all of Baghdad's writers and artists like to hang out in the Shahbander coffee house at the end of the street. I found some copies of books by my favourite iraqi author, Sinan Antoon, and an Arabic translation of the Gilgamesh Epic. 😍
