Becoming the Human Gods [2/2] - "Almost There"
A popular Hindu ritual of worship called #Theyyam in southern state, known as God's own country Kerala. Theyyam is performed by male members of particular castes only. Particular part of the castes who perform Theyyam dance and they are mainly from Malayan, Munnutton, Pulayan, Velan, Chungathan, Koppalan, Mayilon, Vannan & Anjoottan and few more. Theyyam is performed particularly in two districts of Kerala, Kannur and Kasargod, area is also known as Malabar.
The dancer along with the drummers recites the particular ritual song, which describes the myths and legends, of the deity of the shrine or the folk deity to be propitiated. The dancer comes in front of the shrine and gradually “metamorphoses” into the particular deity of the shrine.
I was not good in History class, nor history fascinates me, but 1 thing that fascinates me is the amount of precision people had in 7th century AD.
With no modern machinery, the architecture was really build “brick by brick”. One of such masterclass is Virupaksha Temple.⠀
Focal point of Hampi Bazzar, the Virupaksha Temple is one of the city’s oldest structures, and only remaining working temple. The temple consists of one main gopuram, almost 50m high which was built on 1442, & the smaller one added in 1510. As the main shrine is dedicated to Virupaksha, an incarnation of Shiva, hence the name Virupaksha Temple. Amazing to know Virupaksha Temple has been a place of worship since 7th century, when it consisted of a collection of simple shrines. As time progressed, the complex grew as its sanctum, beautifully carved colonnaded halls and gateways were added.⠀
There was cloud cover whole day, evening was a completely wash out, but as I waited and waited, magic happened, & I witnessed some dramatic clouds. It was for a very small time, may be 1 minute.⠀
As my first time with a Historical place, I got some shots and missed some shots, there was so much happening that you are bound to miss some, but it gave me an opportunity to visit Hampi once again. ⠀
