Are you in the NY area? Join #liberationprisonyoga founder Anneke Lucas on 3/24 for an introduction to #theunconditionalmodel at @allyoganyc. We will explore power dynamics, within ourselves, as reflected in society and in the justice system.
Many incarcerated people work during their time behind bars and are subject to sexual harassment and assault. We would like to see incarcerated people included in the wonderful #timesup movement. We cannot leave this population behind as advances are made on the outside. We stand in solidarity. #timesupbehindbars
For the last few weeks I’ve noticed one of our more regular students was missing from class. Today I went to check in with her in the dorm. She told me she’d been feeling down. ‘This time of year...my kids...’ her voice trailed off, her eyes lowered. A brave moment of vulnerability and I’m grateful to have been there to share it. Sometimes that’s all we have.
This time of year can be complicated for so many reasons. -Yael, Rikers Island

Lockdowns happen for many reasons in jail. This means that people can end up spending lots of time alone in their cell. This was the case a few days ago. ‘Lena’ and ‘Kathy’ showed up to class excited and grateful to move. We did breathing exercises that invigorated our bodies and cultivated a sense of mindful awareness. Kathy played with a balancing pose that she never tried before and smiled at doing something new. The practice was more physical than usual because the women wanted to stretch and move after being so cooped up. Before meditation we sat and played with extended exhales. Insomnia isn’t uncommon in jail. The work we do is sometimes deep and sacred. Today is was that and also practical. We all shared ways to take care of our physical bodies and ended up tapping into a deeper sense of self. May all of us find connection, be seen, breathe deeply and find peace. #liberationprisonyoga#weareallmembersofthecommunity#yoga#yogaforeveryone#traumainformedyoga#breathe
