a few moments after this photo was taken, one of the dogs ran down the bank on the left there & disappeared. a few seconds later we heard the most ridiculous loud snorting & squealing. we started shouting and shouting, knowing it was wild boar, knowing a boar had recently killed a dog in the woods nearby, and then just as the dog leapt up over the bank back into view, the enormous silhouette of the snorting boar leapt out after him - right on his tail. if we hadn’t been at the top shouting to scare them away, the dog would’ve been trampled. anyway, nice sunset tho 💁♀️
‘time is kept & curated in different ways by trees, and so it is experienced in different ways when one is among them ... it is beyond our capacity to comprehend that the american hardwood forest waited 70 million years for people to come & live in it; it is valuable & disturbing to know that grand oak trees can take 300 years to grow, 300 years to live & 300 years to die. such knowledge, seriously considered, changes the grain of the mind.’

‘nobody will protect you from your suffering. you can't cry it away or eat it away or starve it away or walk it away or punch it away or even therapy it away. it’s just there, and you have to survive it. you have to endure it. you have to live through it and love it and move on and be better for it and run as far as you can in the direction of your best and happiest dreams across the bridge that was built by your own desire to heal.’

woke up bleary eyed & disgustingly hungover on new year’s day, only to be dragged on a five mile hike up carn pica. blazing sunshine on the way up, snow & howling wind at the top. but the mountains teach us things always, no matter how hungover or exhausted. namely: that you didn’t come this far to only get this far.
