This was a photo I had planned out as soon as we thought about taking this trip. I love the way this gravel road weaves through the foreground only to disappear behind a jagged wall of rock.
I had set up my large format camera on top of Panorama Point behind a scraggly tree to shelter it from the gusting wind. It was just before sunset and I had figured that I'd still have the angle on the fading light I needed to illuminate not only the tall mountain in the background but also the gravel road too.
Nature, however, had other plans.
Just as the light was getting good the rain clouds moved in and blocked any remaining light into the valley.. thus ruining my original plans for the film. The only day on our trip we had rain came precisely at this one moment and only lasted until just after sunset, too late for my exposure.
So the only thing I have to show of it are my digital 'proofs' I like to take before I shoot film, where I visually work out any problems before getting down to business.
Not bad, but not what I had planned.
I will be back Capitol Reef!
