Tomorrow night at USC: the reception for "Pain 2”. This piece plus a couple others of mine will be on display at the Hoyt Gallery at the USC Keck School of Medicine along with many other great pieces by other artists. Info under "Exhibits" on my Web site (link in bio). If you're wondering about the inspiration for this piece, it comes from my experience with Crohn's Disease, including 6 major abdominal surgeries. The first of these surgeries occurred when I was 11 and involved removing my entire colon and using part of my small intestine as a substitute colon. It didn't work, which resulted in 4 additional surgeries. Originally it was going to be just two.
My whole life I have turned trauma into something positive. Part of that process is acknowledging the pain instead of burying it. I always have wanted to convey the feeling of knowing that someone opened up my body and removed some of my organs. Just writing that still freaks me out a bit. But it is what it is, so I'm transforming the pain into art. When all of this happened, I didn't know anyone else who had this disease much less these kind of surgeries. I felt so alone. I still feel alone with the specific experiences I had, but I now know people and have some close friends who've had similar experiences and that feels really good.
I know there are many people who feel just as alone now as I did then. I hope this will help them know that there are others of us out there who at least have some idea of what it is/was like. 💜🙏💜 .
