Out of all the tools I own, @picquictools SIXPAC Plus is the most useful and reliable of them all. I'm not sponsored, I'm just sharing something I think you should keep close by. Plus I just found out that they are made just a stone's throw away from the shop here.
I keep one in each vehicle, and one at home...but for some reason I don't have one in the shop. I always run out to the truck to grab this one😂
The fact that they have always been made in Canada makes me love them even more. 🍁♥
I'm having a #flashback !
All the way back to my first outing with @barstowconstruction.
You want to see a house built right? Built with even the smallest details handled perfectly? Then you want to see a Barstow built house.
I'm blown away (and honored) everytime I step foot onto one of their projects. This is probably my favourite railing job to date. 👌
Just dropped $150 on concrete polishing discs. Dove right in.
A common question potential clients ask me: "Have you ever built ______ before?"
Examples, "Birdman, have you ever built a cantilever awning?" or "Have you ever made a #concrete dining table that meets seamlessly with a live edge #walnut slab, sitting on a custom #steel base?"
The simple answer is no. I have not. But am I willing to do the research and utilize all my resources to do so for the right client? The simple answer is yes.
I guess my point is, at some point we did not know how to walk or talk, but we learned. And if you can learn to walk, what the hell is stopping you from #learning new shit as an adult?!
I live for new processes. It's what keeps me going, and the #creative juices flowing.
We have @google now, and the kids don't know what life was like before it, but you couldn't just watch YouTube tutorials on any and every daily life activity you can imagine! There is no excuse to not learn to use a CAD program! Or learn how to biscuit join two pieces of lumber together.
If you wait for the perfect time, you'll be waiting forever. You're gonna screw things up, that's the process.
#dontbeafraidtofuckup (shouts to @andrea.lawson 👊)
One shot, no modification required to achieve this. Just mindful, calculated fabrication. That, paired with CNC laser cut and formed precision on the stainless cladding, equals blissful marriage of materials.
If this isn't true romance, I don't know what is. ♥ I'm getting the feels just watching this.
Big props to my guy Callem AKA C-Murda AKA the ⅛" Driller Killer. He is picking up the skills I'm putting down.
For those unsure of what this is, underneath that ½" MagBoard cladding is an aluminum framework. These are components for an outdoor kitchen.
*PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS ORIGINALLY PUT TO THE Song "REUNITED" AND WAS HILARIOUS, BUT INSTAGRAM FELT THE NEED TO TAKE IT DOWN DUE TO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT 😢
WORK IN PROGRESS
On-site fabrication is complete, the partially built railings are now in the shop for final weld and polish before shipping off to powder-coat.
This one was significantly more work than anticipated, but with an on-point team we kicked its ass. This is gonna look real killer and I can't wait to get this one buttoned up and share the final pics with you all. The house is stunning👌
The young superstar welder @jgordsthewelder picked himself up that new @esabweldingcutting Sentinel...
Nice lid! Guess he couldn't afford a pair of gloves to go with it...oh wait, no, he has some...he just didn't want to turn all the way around apparently 🤦♂️
The young gunner, our boy Callem, AKA C-Murder might refuse to join Instagram, but he's not refusing to pay attention to the details in his fabricating, tig welding and blending.
Doing a great job on this simple and clean dining table base, love to see people improve on a daily basis!
A person who is not too proud to ask questions and learn how to up their skills is the person that fits our team 💯
Yes @loveobsessivelyliveimpulsively, this one is yours 😊 Thanks again for supporting Birdman🙌🙌🙌
We've put the @waltersurftech Big Buff lll through its paces recently and I'll say, this variable speed finisher is a beauty!
The rat tail grip is easy on my old beat up wrist and it's surprisingly light weight for it's size. It's balanced perfectly, it's relatively quiet.
Using the Blendex pads here to smooth out those stainless welded corners👌
I was hesitant at first to pay the price tag that this unit carries, but have never looked back. Anyone thinking about picking one up, I'd say do it, but hit up your Walter rep and take one for a test spin if you're skeptical. That's what I did. 🍊⚡
Swerved to miss the corner, and slid right into a perfectly milled lap joint connection. Very happy with how this rail turned out over at @gramercyhomes World HQ!
Beauty fabrication by @jgordsthewelder, and the millwork by @dubmfg was done with absolute craftsmanship. Nicely done fellas!
The shop is quiet. Lights off, just a little sunshine peaking in.
@jgordsthewelder blasted out a fat stack of components early this morning for an upcoming custom railing gig and hightailed it outta here to go get his weekend started. Thanks for busting ass this morning Josh👊
@leannekbird is off on a Seattle adventure ♥
That leaves @peanut.sees.with.her.heart and myself here to catch up on emails and drawings... Should be able to get my ass back in the shop this evening to put in some work on the Concrete/Walnut/Steel project that's been ongoing in the background.
You want a beefy dining table? I challenge you to find one beefier than this.
A collab between the reclaimed wood master himself @josh_kinkead, and myself. These are the legs I made highlighted in the previous post.
A pleasure working with you pal 👊
As Josh mentioned in the original post, the lighting wasn't great for this pic, but you get the idea.
Throwin' back to some W27 I-beam realness. Sandblasted then polished and finally hit with some black patina and wax, these turned out alright.
I really ended up loving this pair. A dining table base for a collab with @josh_kinkead of @fraservalleycraftsmen. Maybe one day he'll even share a finished pic!🤣
Alright... I kept this to myself as long as I could.
Please enjoy some freshly laid #hammereddogshit on this fine Wednesday. Names will be withheld to save whatever welding reputation this individual has left...🤣🤣🤣...but let's just say this was a friend of a friend.
Tag someone in the comments who lays down welds like this!
You know what!? I'm going to sweeten the pot. Tag someone below who welds like this and I'll send a little @waltersurftech/@birdmanthewelder package to grind those welds down, to one randomly chosen winner!
You have until 9pm PST Thursday March 1.
Put those hack welders on blast!
I can't believe we went a solid 3 years without dropping and breakin' off the plastic spool canister on our @miller_welders Spoolmatic 30. It was bound to happen eventually! But a quick low buck re & re on were back on it thanks to my pal @triceranuts at Air Liquide!
But seriously, anyone else had this problem?! 🤔
Sup Vancouver!? Headed down to the @vanhomeshows this weekend?
Here's your opportunity to plop your butt down in our outdoor sofas!
Be sure to head over to the @bchydro booth, styled by @jamie_banfield_design!
Share a pic, story or Snapchat, tag me and I'll repost it! 👊
Let's get this straight out the gate.
With Amazon and the big box stores cashing in on the DIY furniture trend, we custom builders gotta stay confident and clear with our clients that we truly are providing superior quality workmanship with exceptional customer service on a personal level. This is exactly what Birdman the Welder Inc. is based on, and I know that rings true with most of you fellow builders and makers.
I find myself from time to time trying to justify to potential clients of this. Not so much now that we've built up a name for the brand, more so when we were starting out.
So for all of you trying to get something off the ground, just stay true to your core values. No one ever said starting your own business was easy so be prepared to be work your f****ng ass off. I missed out on a lot of cool shit, working through weekends, late into evenings, etc... But it is now after 5 hard years that we are starting to reap some really killer benefits.
Stay the course! Don't let someone tell you you should be cheaper. You're not competing with Home Depot, because you're already putting out a superior product. You're already winning🥇
Just like this business of mine, everything starts with a small idea.
A local architect fires over a coffee table design he drew up for a gift he's putting together for his daughter, I fabricated and welded it up tonight while everyone else was out driving their cars into each other because they are not bright enough to put snow tires on.
That's all I've got 😂
Acacia missed it😂
Here's a look back at the acacia/steel waterfall desk we did with a slab supplied by @spaltwood. Finished in @osmocanada PolyX for a supreme satin look. It really brought the grain to life on this one. Loved this project!
Shout out to @sscadcam for the engraving on the wood 👊
Been doin' hood sh!t.
Just helping out a friend on this one. They fabricated the sheet metal shroud. I added the cold rolled steel strapping. It will go for final test fit on site and then come back to me for refining and the ol' black patina treatment. #simplesunday
The aluminum train has left the Birdman station👌
Five custom built patio storage frameworks headed to the client to clad in cedar strips. Three standing lockers, two storage benches.
Great work on this one-off build @jgordsthewelder. The client was real happy to collect them. Keep this up and you just might beat out @peanut.sees.with.her.heart for that "Employee of the Month" spot! 😉
The #sandpipercustom project with @barstowconstruction still stands as one of my favorites to date.
Barstow Construction designs and builds quality homes. Period.
I'm throwing it back this Thursday to this railing we did for them.
I think it turned out alright. What do you think? If you were given the opportunity to build your dream home, would you incorporate modern metal design, or do you prefer a more traditional look?
