Mahalo to everyone who came out to @thesurfjack to hear @nathaneaglecb and I talk story about what went into the making of “The Last Wild Place.” It was fun getting to see some familiar faces from our trip and meeting people who are interested in #papahanaumokuakeamarinenationalmonument And a super thanks to the friends who came in support even though you might’ve heard some of our stories already. @anthonyquintano was kind enough to stream it live on @civilbeat and our family really appreciated it. #journalism #hawaii #sustainability #marinedebris #monkseal

I almost fell asleep while holding my breath in bed last night working on my static breath holds. I wonder what would’ve happened? #apnea #girlswhofreedive #papahanaumokuakea
This is the landing page for “The Last Wild Place,” a @civilbeat multimedia project on Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Come hang with us at the @thesurfjack on Feb 13th while @nathaneaglecb and I share stories about our trip to the monument. Get a little #BTS on what it took to get to there. Event link in bio. Project link in comments.

Here’s more of the same north side beach of Laysan island in Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. A word commonly used to describe the monument is “pristine.” If you look close enough, there are four endangered Hawaiian monk seals resting on this beach in this picture. There were more that I didn’t get in the frame. Also, no humans live on this island. #papahanaumokuakea #nationalmonuments #monkseal #saveourseas #lessplastic #wildlife #photographer #videographer
Excuse me trash, you’re in my shot. I enjoy shooting wildlife (with my camera) and usually try to crop out an unappealing piece of trash. But in one of the most remote places in the world, that was practically impossible without a superzoom and it would’ve been a lie to not show the immense amount of crap littering the island. Birds used fish traps as nests and monk seals snuggled with gatorade bottles and fishing nets. It’s not just trash from the fishing industry or tsunamis but odd everyday items like toothbrushes, laundry baskets, car seats, slippahs. How did we let it get this bad? Thanks for capturing me in a sweaty squat @nathaneaglecb #uselessplastic #plasticfree #wildlifephotography #civilbeat #thelastwildplace

No waves at makapu’u today so we swam and caught up on life. Love these ocean babes with all my heart. Thanks for the relaxing afternoon. @wahinesurfer @bigsheart. 📽@tangerland #quikstories #gopro

Patches are fun to collect when traveling because they are light, small, and a challenge to find. Everyone sells keychains but not really patches anymore. We started our collection in 2014 after @tangerland and I got married. Can’t wait to see where it’ll be in 5, 10, 50 Years! My cousin @sully628 inspired this hobby when his friends got him a wool blanket for his patch collection. And he travels a bunch. One of his friends started a patch blanket as a kid! Rule is we have to buy the patch in the location ourselves. Not online and not from a friend. If you can’t find one, oh well. If you love to travel, I highly suggest doing this. Your memories can keep you warm on the couch. I wonder what the next patch will be. #patchcollection #patchblanket #travel #nationalparks #thirdmanrecords #belize #southafrica #surfpittsburgh #haleakala #tikalnationalpark #guatemala #volcanoesnationalpark #spaceneedle #nashville #fiji #trotwood #kokee #kauai #arkansas #yosemite #ludington #portland #outsidelands

“Among the dozens of tiny islands, atolls and shoals inside the monument (Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument) is Midway. Ammunition bunkers, machine gun turrets and military barracks remind visitors of the pivotal World War II battle.” -@nathaneaglecb Civil Beat. This crumbling pier is an example of how difficult it is to maintain the structures left on Midway. It’s expensive and difficult to get any supplies here and construction crews only have a few months when the Albatross birds are out to sea and not nesting on every square foot of the ground. Below the pier were large Ulua, reef sharks, honu and nudibranchs. Diving down to take photos and then resurfacing, I had to be careful not to get stabbed in the head by rusted rebar. Taken on assignment for @civilbeat. #papahanaumokuakea #ww2 #thelastwildplace

I’m pretty excited to have one of my photos up on the @weatherchannel homepage today for a story I worked on with @nathaneaglecb and @corypix. Climate change is undebateable. It’s here and affects each state of our country every day. This is not a political debate even though politicians try to make it one. In Hawaii, scientists at @gatescorallab are racing to save corals that have been around for 200 million years from an ocean that’s getting hotter. @civilbeat #climatechange #coralbleaching

The Lasan crew from @usfws remove a large fishing net caught on the Coral right off shore. Sometimes the nets are so heavy they aren’t able to drag it up to shore without cutting it into smaller pieces. Shot on assignment for @civilbeat “The Last Wild Place” with @nathaneaglecb. #marinedebris #papahanaumokuakea #civilbeat

Explore the underwater world of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This protected area is full of wildlife where human interaction is minimal. The end of this video was my favorite part of this trip. Capturing Eagle Rays swimming right off shore with an over under framing. Brown Noddy birds sit near the water on Laysan Island. Noddies display a nodding motion to their mates during courtship. The female begs for food from the male and the male will “courtship feed” it several times a day. A “fish flight” is when one bird transfers a fish to its partner. The female will lay one egg and partners will take turns incubating on shifts of 14-30hours while the other goes out on he ocean to feed. Last night we went to the grand opening of @appetitowaikiki where they have a beautiful golden pizza oven that makes pizza in 45 seconds! The restaurant is on the corner of the @ohanawaikikieast and seems like a great place for a celebration. Also the food was ono! Check out my story before it disappears. If you ever need help planning an event, contact @media_etc because that party was no boring pizza party, it was 🔥! #hawaiieats #waikiki

This is one of the only lookouts that allowed us to get out of our vehicle while in Kruger National Park. It was a thrill thinking that just around the corner there could be a cheetah, a baboon or an elephant. There was elephant poop on the ground so we knew that was a possibility. It’s always difficult to spot wildlife at first but if you look close enough or wait the animals start to appear. One observation I was fascinated with was how each animal was designed exactly for its habitat and food source. I know that’s a “duh” idea, but seeing these African animals was a whole new “ah ha” moment for me. The giraffes 🦒grazed the tops of the trees and their bodies blended in with the branches. The zebras 🦓 camoflauged with the bright lights and shadows of the day. The lions 🦁 are the exact color and texture of the grass they hunt in. The elephants blended in other large rocks so much that I started to take pictures of large rocks because they looked so much like elephants. It was incredible to see these animals in the wild. I had only seen them in zoos, where their habitats are artificial and restricted. Nature’s design is fascinating, inspiring and thought provoking. I hope future generations will get to see these animals in the wild. 📷 @tangerland #wildafrica #krugernationalpark #wildlifephotography #savetherhino #savetheelephants #southafrica

Each month we will have new words or phrases to learn in various languages but always with a purpose and vibe. This is appropriate for January when I am making #goals and setting intentions for the year/next five years. #lovelylittlelightbox

2017 was the best year yet! We bought a house, went to Papahanaumokuakea on assignment, traveled to South Africa, played in the water, made a ton of hakus and a whole lot more that we couldn’t share! I also feel like I’ve found my voice and confidence on protecting the environment. In 2018 I will develop and explore more of the potential within, set higher goals and work harder. @tangerland Thank you for being my adventure partner in life. Where are we going in 2018? Time for some timeline planning! #2017bestnine
