The Fire Extinguisher
Since 1818, fire extinguishers have saved countless lives. The most common fire extinguishers use a sodium bicarbonate in a dry chemical gaseous state pressurized into a container holding a considerable amount of the substance. They are also made of metal making each canister weight anywhere between 5-15 lbs depending on size and model. In a survival situation, specifically life and death concerning an attacker, the fire extinguisher can be used to great effect whether through blunt force or chemical warfare. See, the pressurized sodium bicarbonate, when released, causes a significant and sudden drop in temperature in the area it is released in. So cold in fact, that water can freeze almost instantly. Therefore, spraying someone with the sodium bicarbonate will not only cut off their oxygen supply, but also freeze any water immediately present in their mouth, nostrils, and lungs. This will undoubtedly render any assailant incapacitated or at least disoriented. As a melee weapon, fire extinguishers could be used to a decent effect if necessary. Being heavy and made from metal makes them good for bludgeoning strikes. Due to their shape, finding a good grip may be difficult. Against a zombie, we believe a fire extinguisher could definitely get the job done. However, against an armed opponent a fire extinguisher would not likely fair well. Due to its weight, shape, and lack of reach, using a fire extinguisher as a weapon would put a user at a severe disadvantage unless theuser has the element of surprise on their side. As a tool, we feel it would be worth keeping one around because of how efficiently it can put out fires. What do you think of the fire extinguisher as a weapon? Let us know in the comments!
