Being half Swiss, I’ve always stayed fairly neutral when it comes to the IG yoga drama (I usually only weigh in on those topics over some cocktails with my favourite yogals), but what has been unfolding on here lately is a bit mind boggling. If you are unaware, then read @kinoyoga‘s latest article on @elephantjournal and Paul Javid’s response, also on @elephantjournal.
As far as I can tell, as outsiders, we will never get the full story, because both sides have vested interests that make the truth impossible to decipher. I’m not so much interested in the he-said-she-said, but rather the effect that commercialisation has had on yoga and our community here on IG - and how it may finally be unravelling itself.
It sounds like some far-away magic land now, but I still remember when the yoga community on here hugely inspired and uplifted my practice at a time when I most needed it. By comparison, over the past few years this platform has felt utterly futile and overrun with just one type of yoga: contortionist, extreme yoga asana in bikinis. There is exactly ZERO wrong with that in my opinion (I myself love seeing what the human body is capable of), but it has created an outside perception that this is all that yoga is about, which is hugely problematic from my perspective as a teacher. Where on Instagram are the chair yogis, the sexy restorative yogis, the chanters, the tantrics, the Sanskrit fanatics? Where are the yoga props? Where’s the diversity? Not just in the types of yoga, but also the people practicing it?
None of my Thursday evening group of dedicated yoga students (who are all white middle class ladies over the age of 35) will even go to a yoga studio, because they fear being judged for not having a “yoga body” - despite the fact that their bodies can handle anything yoga could ever throw at them. That is a sad state of affairs and I can only imagine what anyone even less represented thinks of yoga.
Our community has been bulldozed by corporate greed and much of the honest, supportive interaction on here has dissipated. Maybe this backlash is in part a response to all the humanity that we have been stripped of.

Monday and #ashtangamondays today! Yay!🌸
Virabhadrasana a & b are the pose selections for the week, swipe to see my b. I find these poses look easy but are actually difficult and take years of practice to find alignment that really resembles the ideal and its nuances. Teaching them, particularly to beginners, is even more of a challenge. Finding the flexibility in the hip for front facing hips and the outward rotation of the back leg is a place that care must be used when learning this pose (a version). Too far of a turn out with the foot on the back leg while pressing the hip square will torque the knee.
For the b version, the knee is supposed to be pulled back and over the foot. For a newer practitioner, the hip may not yet have the space for that and adjustments are made to accommodate.
Even in the simplest poses, there is so much to learn to ensure our bodies are safely practicing asana. I tell my newest students not to worry about the ideal look of a pose. When we are doing the work in the right places, the way the pose looks will change with time & practice.
I always feel strong and graceful when I do this powerful set of poses. How do they make you feel?

A lil throwback to a few days ago when I was laying on the grass, basking in the sunshine. 🌞 What 'appened?! ☃ despite freezing ma tets off waiting for the bus, I'm ready for a new week 👊 Buzzin' to start my yoga teacher training on Saturday, but mostly buzzin' for a massive stationary shop. Any excuse ey? 🤓 Dreamy athleisure by @fatface 🙌
