This morning I was lucky enough to have a private tour of the Paston Treasure exhibition by its incredibly knowledgeable and lovely curators at the #YCBA, a show which, amongst many other treasures, features the Met's anonymous English viol which I've recently played. #Onthisday in 1663, Sir William Paston (1610–1663) of Oxnead Hall died, leaving a sizeable estate and a #collection of objets d’art of considerable value. In his will, William stipulated that his collection was to be carefully divided between his second wife, Margaret Paston née Hewitt (d. 1669), and his eldest son, Robert (1631–1683). To ensure that a dispute over his possessions would not erupt after his death, William specified that Margaret divide the collection into “two equal parts” and that Robert choose which half to keep for himself.
.
“The Paston Treasure,” currently on view at the Center, was painted around the time of William’s death and records the ambition and status of a family that by the seventeenth century was the richest of all the #Norfolk gentry. The cabinet of curiosities at Oxnead, immortalized in the #painting, demonstrates a carefully crafted taste for naturalia (natural objects) and artificialia (man-made objects) from around the globe: mother-of-pearl from India, a strombus shell from the Caribbean, and flagons and tankards from the leading goldsmiths of northern Europe. For William, whose collecting was at once visionary and obsessive, the Paston motto could not have been more appropriate: “De mieulx je pense en mieulx” (“I think of better and better things”).

Definitely not what you want to find in your hive. Tonight I jumped over the fence to check the hives at my place im this 70 degree weather to see how they did. My hive survived but my pal Jess's did not 😣. I believe her hive died from starvation which I think was preventable if I knew a bit more about winter maintenance. My hive barely has food but is currently robbing her hive. I will try and get some pollen cakes to give them as I believe bc the weather is still a bit unpredictable sugar water could end up being disastrous. I will check in with my local experts to find out what my next move should be. Tomorrow I will check the hives at her house with fingers crossed we got a little lucky.

Happy 117th Birthday Louis I. Kahn!

Yale University (@yale) is grateful for his contributions as an #architect, design critic, and professor. The Yale Center for British Art is a brilliant example of #Kahn's most mature #architectural work and it was his final #building—completed after his death and which opened to the public in 1977. Our painting ’The Paston Treasure’ has made a long journey and is on view at "The Paston Treasure: Microcosm of the Known World." @yalebritishart .
The Center presents an exhibition featuring the enigmatic masterpiece "The Paston Treasure" (ca. 1663) in its North American debut. Organized in partnership with the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, UK (@norwich_castle_art), "The Paston Treasure: Microcosm of the Known World" explores the world of the Pastons—a landowning family of #Norfolk famous for their medieval letters—through a #display of nearly 140 objects from more than fifty international institutional and private lenders.
.
This #exhibition includes five treasures from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that appear in the painting: a pair of silver-gilt flagons, a Strombus shell cup, two unique nautilus cups, and a perfume flask with a mother-of-pearl body, which will be gathered together for the first time in more than three centuries. A host of other objects, many with Paston provenance, depict the story of collecting within the family from the medieval period until the moment of the making of the #painting.

The short film presents a technical journey into "The Paston Treasure" that delves beneath the #paint layers to explain how this unusual #painting was made and how it has changed over the last 350 years. Traditional and pioneering analytical techniques were used to reconstruct the experience of the #artist, his painting materials, momentum, and interruptions that left major compositional changes hidden under the painted surface. The unique quality of the painting's composition and color balance today are traced back to its making and the extraordinary interaction between #painter and patron.

“Long before 11 o’clock” on January 21, 1830, “a multitude of people” assembled in front of Somerset House, reported the London Times, to escort the body of Sir Thomas Lawrence to St. Paul's Cathedral. Befitting his status as President of the Royal Academy of Arts and portraitist to the King, the funeral was met with great fanfare and all of Lawrence’s friends, colleagues, and patrons were in attendance. #Painters John Constable, David Wilkie, and J. M. W. Turner, who sketched the scene “from memory,” sat together upon the procession’s arrival at St. Paul’s.
.
Following the #service, Lawrence’s body was buried in the crypt where former Royal Academy presidents Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West had been interred. Among the pallbearers was George James Welbore Agar-Ellis, a longtime friend of Lawrence and fellow trustee of the National Gallery. In his diary, Agar-Ellis lamented the passing of Lawrence as “a great loss to #art” and remarked of the #funeral that the “effect of the local[e], the crowd, etc. was very striking.”
.
Years earlier, Agar Ellis had sat to Lawrence for a #portrait, often remaining at the painter’s house for hours on end. He enjoyed those sittings, writing, “We repeated verses together & told stories alternately. I hope mine amused him – I am sure his amused me exceedingly.”

Cornfield Dance will perform "Close-Up" on Saturday, January 20, at 3 pm.
.
This playful and intelligent work will be performed throughout three of the Center's spaces, with the #dances using a striking movement language of robust dance phrases, gestures, and facial expressions. The physical shapes of selected #art in the Center's collections are incorporated into portions of the dance language, bringing viewers close-up and intimate with the #performers, the #museum, and the #artwork, resulting in a unique performance.

The New York City based #choreographer Ellen Cornfield began presenting her #choreographic works after her tenure with the Merce Cunningham Company, where she was known for her spirited #dancing. Her work exemplifies the exhilarating combination of heart and intellect, performed by #dancers who "are among the most proficient technical and kinetically expressive dancers around." Cornfield's dances have a rigorous structure and revel in the use of space, time, and geometric relationships. Her work uses an elegant, full-throttle #dance language, interspersed with quirky material suggesting stories that never become literal or obvious. This #performance is presented with support of the Yale Center for British Art through the generosity of the Terry F. Green 1969 Fund for British Art and Culture.

The Cover Collaboration for our latest issue of #BritishArtStudies is 'Seeing Red' by Glenn Adamson, with photography by Richard Caspole.

'It is an invasion, of sorts: a legion of vases, each about five feet high, made of porcelain. Floridly patterned and scarlet red, they are placed throughout the Yale Center for British Art (@yalebritishart ), on every floor, in the galleries, in the library court, on the stairs. The installation, Made in China, is by the artist Clare Twomey. Its effect is most improbable, with a surreal, larger-than-life quality. It is as if caterers were about to deliver a banquet for thousands of people; or a factory floor had been teleported into the galleries; or as if ceramics were finally being recognized as a dominant genre in British art.' -
