My Top 5 finds of 2017:
Nr.2 is this beautiful juvenile Sunbeam snake (Xenopeltis unicolor). In my opinion the best snake picture I have taken this year. The iridescence on this animal was just amazing and I hope this picture can give you an idea of this snakes beauty.
I arrived in Indonesia on the 18th of December, but despite it being snake season, since then I haven't seen any wild snakes due to a bombardment of work and meetings (none of which involved fieldwork). Last night, I was asked to remove 'nuisance' snakes at the JAAN animal shelter, as they have found cobras previously and are worried that the dogs may get injured in an encounter with the snakes.
Looking for snakes with a bunch of dogs barking and following me around was no easy task, but finally I found the first snake of the night, which was my first wild snake of the season - a stunningly beautiful juvenile sunbeam snake, Xenopeltis unicolor. They normally have a white coloration on the collar behind the head as juveniles, which will fade away as they grow. However, this particular individual had white on its head as well.
So sad...I thought I have rescue this Rainbow Snake when I saw it among some guys on the street. I caught it and it gave me its last fight, then I put it in my backpack. Some of the guys suprise and said "I thought it have already died..". I took it home and I was shocked because it bleeding and so weak. Unfortunately it have injury on its head and I suspicious that the guys have hit it before I rescued it. Rest in peace beautiful rainbow snake, I represent those guys appologize for this unfriendly reaction that cause you died.... #rainbowsnake#xenopeltisunicolor#earthsnake#ularpelangi#snake#reptile#stopkillingsnake#restinpeace#nonvenomoussnake#xenopeltis

Sadly, I didn't get a full shot as it slithered into the grass. Before it disappeared, I was get afew shots and touched it. It had a smooth body and was also slimy at the same time😂 pretty awesome first encounter!!!✌
My sighting: #first time
Family name: #Xenopeltidae
Common name: #sunbeam snake
Scientific name: #Xenopeltis unicolour
~This was my first time encountering this species of snake. Commonly address as sunbeam snake, this snake is found in lowland habitats often near wet and swampy areas. Preying mostly on lizards and rats that roam the surroundings. Something unique about their scales is if we were to shine onto it, it gives a iridescent sheen that is awesome to look at!!😎
