Sometimes I long to travel back in time. To a time when we lived closer to nature. A time when life wasn't so hectic. A time when we weren't so connected to everyone and everything at every moment. A time when life was a little more local and a little more simple.
Because I yearn for a simpler life. One that is more centered around the things that matter the most and a little less on the things that don't.
But then, I realize that I don't have to do anything as dramatic (or impossible) as all that.
All I have to do is spend a little more time in places like this...

He did just what I’ve always feared today. He ran away from me. One moment he was there, the next he was gone.
I shouted his name over and over. After a moment or two I caught a brief glimpse of green high up on the hill behind us. I started running immediately in that direction.
I don’t know why, but he had decided to run back up the hill on his own. Perhaps he knew we were headed home and simply wasn’t ready.
Whatever the reason, he came back to me and Inka as we climbed back up to him. For which I am immensely grateful.
I realize there‘s danger in providing our pups the freedom to be wild and to enjoy these places the way they do. The way they love best. But that is always the case. With freedom always comes risk. It’s as true for us humans as it is for these precious souls.
I know that and it scares me. Today it scared me a lot for those few short moments that felt much, much longer than that.
But, it’s also what feels right.
And so, we take what precautions we can and we let them be wild when we can.

Training for an ultra is not easy. I'll probably have more hours of pain, sweat and tears on the trail leading up to it than I will actually experience at the race itself. It's all a part of the process. Sometimes you're elated, sometimes you're discouraged but most of the time you are driven to finish what you started regardless. Today's long run was just another lesson in doing just that. I ran 24ish miles by myself, barely another soul in sight, with fire in my hips and glutes every step of the way, very few calories in my belly, frequent thoughts of the redbull waiting in the car for me and a huge smile on my face. #SWAPteam #beunstoppable

What have you guys got on the racing schedule this year?
〰️
Georgia Death Race at the end of March is my A race and will be my first 100k (more like 72 miles 😂) but outside of that I have decided to focus on some fun shorter distances the rest of the year! Coaching has made me more excited for not only the possibilites of being able to run faster but also to train in a way that will make me be able to run longer. Running shorter races will make it so I can still have the racing euphoria but also be able to keep my legs for the whole year without feeling like I'm constantly recovering from long distances. Sometimes there is a "stigma" behind running shorter distances when you are an ultra-runner cause there are those that are always looking for the next big thing, the next big challenge. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that but I also think its important to take a step back and enjoy all the other opportunities we have available to us that will give us long running lives and not get burnt out after a few short years.
〰️
Here is what I'm signed up for the year so far, but I also plan on filling it up as the year goes on with more little races that sound fun and pretty. So if you've got a fun race you plan on doing, let me know! I might want to jump in on that action!
〰️
March 10th- Run Through Time 1/2 Marathon
〰️
March 31st-April 1st- Georgia Death Race 100k
〰️
May 6th-Bloomsday 12k (in my hometown of Spokane)
〰️
June 3rd-Dirty 30 12 miler (did the 50k last year so just want to come back and enjoy the shorter- not any less brutal-course)
〰️
September 22nd- Whistler Alpine Meadows 55k (this was my 4th ultra and my very first DNF from last year. Coming back because it's a beautiful course and everyone loves a little redemption😁) #SWAPteam #beunstoppable

As you began
You'll end the year with me.
We'll hug each other while we can,
Work or stray while we must.
Nothing is, or will ever be,
Mine, I suppose. No one can hold a heart,
But what we hold in trust
We do hold, even apart. “In Trust” by Thom Gunn .

If you let go of the limiting story you always tell yourself, what could your life look like? How would your thoughts shift? Your feelings? What would you be experiencing?

What outdoor adventures would suddenly shift from a dream to a reality? If your fears didn't hold you in the palm of their hand anymore, would you speed up or slow down? If you were to re-write your story, what role would you play?

What challenges would you allow yourself to fully face and embrace, knowing you'll make it through one way or another? Would oceans still seem to large to swim across? Peaks to high to climb? Or would you find yourself confidently gliding above the water as you make your way about the world in a new way?
Would your Everest still seem impossible? Or would you confidently face its North face? What's your new story? #wwwonderwednesday #womenswilderness

“Your daughter has a form of epilepsy called petit mal or childhood epileptic absences. It might improve by itself when she hits puberty or it might not. For now, we need to put her on a medication.” That was in 2010. Mara was 6 years old. At one point, she had up to 30 absences a day. We were scared and had no idea if she could one day ski, bike, drive a car by herself or simply cross the road safely. We did a lot of research and thanks to a combination of low-carb diet and supplements, she was absence-free a few years later. Today, she not only can bike without having me by her side all the time (riding along the road was pretty scary when she had absences...), but she races!
I’m so thankful for her full recovery!

Not only did we make Meaghan's dog do an out and back and have to smell all of the same smells over again, we also made her do hill repeats with us...which I found to be quite comical 😂 Thanks for the run ladies!!

"Often, athletes are afraid of rest because, deep down, they lack confidence in the work they’ve done. It is easy to rest after you have put in the work. You should need it."- Jason Koop-- Yeeesssss, Im always ready for my rest days but especially after this weekend. I put the work in HARD. Let's stop the stigma behind rest days. You don't have to be a non stop athlete to be a bad ass or a hard worker or inspiring. The truth is, we would all be better athletes if we allowed our bodies the rest it needed. #RESTDAYBRAGS

We didn't plan to match running outfits today but that's just what happens when you put two bright AF people together 😁. Finally getting to share some miles with this girl was the perfect end to the weekend. I'm constantly being reminded of the wonderful, intelligent & badass women I have in my life. They are the ones that inspire me to be who I am, on and off the trails. Welcome back to running Emily! We've missed ya! 😙 #beunstoppable

When the digits of your run are higher than the temperature outside. 😂 I've been having some fantastic long runs lately so I was due for a sufferfest. 20 miles in 14 degrees with that super fun kind of snow that makes you slip around everywhere. My legs didn't want to move, I was cold AF, my back was killing me and all I could think of the last 4 miles was a scalding hot shower. Runs like these are what I will channel when I'm suffering at GDR next month. Feeling great is easy, suffering is something you have to remind yourself that you can handle. #SWAPteam #beunstoppable

"Trust your feet, they said.

Nope, I thought. Not on that tiny lip of rock that looked like the only surface within a mile of my next good foothold. How in the world was I supposed to balance my weight there? Just. No. ‘Trust your feet.’ It was one of those new-agey granola phrases like ‘get in your body’ and ‘ground yourself’ that never made sense to me.

I was new to climbing, and up to that point, the sport had been more about feats of daring and bravado on the rocks than challenging the limits of my comfort zone—even if those limits meant all I could do was get in the harness. Remember that opening scene in one of the Mission Impossible movies, where Tom Cruise was rock climbing at the top of the world, no one around for miles—no ropes, no guides, just him, his chalk bag, great hair, and will? It seemed epic, the stuff of Hollywood and legend, or at least it was the stuff of rich white people.

That’s the other thing rock climbing had always been to me: exclusive, remote, white, male—an insider’s club for the well-connected. In the advertising, in the outdoors, and until very recently, in my mind."

Though I leave my two sweet pups behind for a week, I am comforted to know that they are in good hands. They are in hands that will feed and love and care for them as if they are the most precious souls in the world.
You see, they will be with Shawn. Because he stayed behind too so that they would not be left alone with strangers. Even though he was the hardest of them all to leave.
Thank you my sweet everything for taking care of our little loves. Thank you for loving me with the freedom to spend time with my other family while you take care of ours.

"The antidote to exhaustion isn't rest. It's nature." -Shikoba
I've been struggling with this lately. I know the healing effect that nature has on my mind and soul. I know that I will feel happier and more settled and more calm when I return from a journey outside.
But sometimes my exhaustion wins and I cannot find the will power to get my feet moving and take those first steps down a trail.
Today I took those steps and went into nature. I'm better off for it. As I always am.

"Trail-running fitness does not follow a linear progression. Instead, it follows something more like the flight path of a drunken duck that swerves and then crashes into a lake. You’ll progress, you’ll get a bit worse, you’ll progress some more and then you’ll decline gradually with age, before eventually dying. At some point in that trajectory, you’ll peak without really realizing it, only to have an epiphany one day that your best is behind you. In the face of a chaotic trail-running journey, embrace the present, no matter where it is. Entropy will win eventually, like it always does, so resolve to enjoy the game while it lasts." -- David Roche #SWAPteam #beunstoppable

I call her my little angel baby.
I’m not sure when I started to call her that. I’m not sure it came from any sort of conscious or deliberate thought. It sort of just fit.
But when I do stop and think about it, it makes perfect sense.
Because, if angels really are looking after us, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they came to us as dogs.

A lot of people talk about wanting to improve their birding skills so they try all sorts of tips and tricks to do so. The "tip" that I’m going to share with you today is one of the most elemental, but it may feel a little edgy and disconcerting at first. It is honestly one of the best things you can do to become a better birder…. and a better observer of life in general. ⠀

Watching the surfers in their element, I find myself envious of their time spent in the sea while also pretty much okay with not braving the frigid January temperatures with them.

Traveling through Mexico has been a totally different experience for us. We normally travel at night to skip traffic, but here it is not recommended so we’ve been waking up a little before the sun to hit the road. It turns out, sunrise traveling becomes one of our favorite things to do - especially after seeing the sun lighting up the Popocatépetl accompanied by skies of pink and blue ☁️

The River’s Path and Bird Mentor are partnering to explore a gorgeous section of the Green River, which just happens to be one of the main north-south flyways for many North American waterfowl. ⠀
This 9-day adventure will transform your relationship with birds and the natural world.⠀

53 days until Georgia Death Race! Even though it's been pretty mild here in Colorado, I can't say it's been easy to have been doing all of my training for this race in the winter months. Some days I had to force myself out in "freeze your tits" temperatures and other days I was lucky enough to be able to wear shorts and a tank top. I've learned to ice skate on trails, run against turbulent wind and deal with completely dead legs but I've also gained the strength to run up things I never thought I would be able too, PRd paces I didn't think were possible, found many friends willing to endure the rough weather days with me, and built a confidence that I can absolutely crush this race. And I still have 53 more days to dig deeper, work harder and get stronger. Let's do this! 📷: @trail_kat #SWAPteam #beunstoppable

Inka gave me a good scare a while back. The truth is, these pups have been the source of every single one of the most terrifying moments of my life. I simply love them too much.
On this particular occasion, she and I were hiking alone in a snowy wood. She was running ahead of me and around me as she usually does. She runs a few hundred feet in front of me and then she comes back and circles around behind me. And then she does it again and again. She rarely leaves my sight.
She just needs to experience her time outside at a pace much faster than mine.
One time she didn't come back. After a moment or two, I began calling her name but she didn't leap back into sight as she always does. I kept calling and she still wasn’t there.
My heart started pounding in my chest and breathing because difficult. My mind scattered in a million directions. I hadn't seen which direction she'd gone and I was at a crossroads.
I found her after a few minutes. She'd fallen into a snowy ditch and couldn’t climb out. And so she was just waiting calmly for me to come find her and lift her out. She wasn’t scared at all.
I'm not sure if her faith in me is inspiring, humbling, or terrifying...

Here at Women's Wilderness we talk a lot about connection and community- for good reasons. Whether you're climbing a new route, exploring rafting for the first time, or learning a new skill, having people who are able to hold space for you can make a world of a difference. Support doesn't always mean pushing you to do something when you're not too sure about it. It looks more like asking you questions, providing feedback, and empowering you to make your own decisions. Jim Rohn is famous for having said, "you're the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with." Who do you surround yourself with? Who do you feel the most empowered by? Tag these supportive friends of yours in the comments below! #womenswilderness #womenempoweringwomen

This was quite possibly the fastest I have ever hiked in my entire life. I’m normally quite slow. Well, really, I’m really slow. Shawn constantly has to stop and wait for me.
But this hike was different. You see, Inka almost never leaves my sight. Not when we’re doing day-to-day activities and certainly not when we’re hiking. She likes to be with her people at every single moment.
But this hike was different. She left me for about 15-20 minutes. Because the fastest people in our group were the ones with her new four-legged friends. So she followed them. And I trailed behind.
I kept waiting for her to come dashing back, sprinting straight toward me and then twisting to the side at the very last moment. It’s how she always comes back to me. I kept waiting for her to be sitting patiently around each bend, waiting to catch sight of me before moving on.
But she didn’t do either of those things. And so, I hiked faster. Much faster. So that I eventually caught up to her. And I stayed with her.
Because she’s my baby girl and she belongs with me. And I with her.

Separating the kind of life I truly want to lead vs the kind of life that felt expected of me has been such a struggle over the years. Are my desires truly my own, or are they a product of what I feel I “should” be doing? It has taken a lot of deep soul searching but my own inner voice is becoming louder and more clear over time, and for that I am grateful.

I dislike drawing lines between groups of people. I don't like labels. I think they can sometimes divide us in ways that are unnecessary. I prefer to focus on those things we have in common rather than the things we don't. Because those common things are always, always there.
And so, I always resisted women's groups. Why do I need to do the things I love only with women? Or any other one, specific group for that matter? Why can't I just share them with anyone who loves those things like I do?
Over time, however, I've learned that sometimes labels are appropriate. Sometimes they bring us together, and not apart.
Because sometimes they are a part of our identify and how we define and view ourselves. And sometimes it is a simple, effortless pleasure to share with the people who are most like us.
And that's okay.

Up until a few months ago, I was really lax on foam rolling and doing core/leg work because all I could find energy for was my actual running. After a simple "if you have to run less in order to foam roll, do it" from my coach I realized I was being ridiculous. I have the time, I was simply choosing to not do it. So since around December I made the concious effort of making foam rolling and planking every day a habit. I always try to at least do those two things. If I'm feeling really good, I'll add other strength training and injury prevention exercises. In January I decided to keep track of what I was actually doing every day just to instill the habit even more. I also worked on really trying to fuel my body before and after runs. I didn't do very well some days and other days I did awesome. I'm not keeping track so that I can make myself feel shitty about the days I did less. I'm doing it so I can feel good about the time I DID take every day to work toward taking care of my body. Running is about more than just running. Coaching has taught me that and many other things. Be good to yourself, love yourself for what you can do and work hard toward the things you want to do better. 😚 (P.S. I realized I just posted a photo I had already shared so posting this one it's place...hopefully I haven't shared this one already! 😂) #SWAPteam #beunstoppable

Early start up Aasgard last summer as the sun gradually lit up the peaks around us. I absolutely love these jagged rocks. A few hours later, smoke from wildfires nearby obstructed most of our views. You could smell it in the air. A few days later this trail was closed down because of those same fires. It was scary and heartbreaking to witness. This place holds such a special place in my heart, and this backpacking trip with two amazing women next to me stands out as one of the most memorable trips I’ve taken.

If I could capture the beauty, growth + importance I’ve found in sisterhood into words + images, I’m still not sure if there’s a space large enough to encompass this. But, I’m willing to do my best to make a place that welcomes + amplifies the strengths + bravery of every woman who chooses to empower it - no matter if their voice is embodied through art, music, poetry, photos or text. ⠀
⠀
Each human holds so many lessons that are developed for us all to grow from; but through building deep relationships with women, I’ve learned a strength in softness, a power in vulnerability + an empowerment in the collection of femininity that every woman, man + human should know. ⠀
⠀
Stay tuned tomorrow for the launch of #GirlsGoneRoadie - a community blog for women, by women who live to explore + create to inspire. ⠀

We pulled this from the archives of her Get Profiled Q + A. Alyx has been empowering, supporting + inspiring us since day 1 of connecting with her + her amazing community built for getting people out side around LA. She's one woman who's helped us discover the power of community + beauty of sisterhood created around empowering your fellow females to follow their dreams. ⠀
⠀
Just 1 more day until the launch of #GIRLSGONEROADIE, a community contributed blog + movement for women, by women going live on StrandedonLand.com tomorrow. Are you ready?!⠀

Wash park can be a bit of a boring place to run at but only if you let it. It's where I let my mind shut off and wander and sometimes during my speed workout, it feels as if I'm removed from my own body. The geese are probably my favorite, their sqwaks becoming white noise with a musical ring to it. They never run away when I come whizzing by either, they just look at me like "hey dude, see you next lap!". Happy twerkout Wednesday! #SWAPteam

To experience the world through the eyes + body of the feminine is an evergoing act of different magical powers. Creating a space where we can safely express ourselves while lovingly empower each other seems necessary in these interesting times when women are still rising to claim their freedom of identity. This project for me is about cultivating a diverse community exploring the deepest roots of what it means to be a woman experiencing the world, connecting to nature + pursuing a meaningful life through different lenses. ⠀
It has been through sisterhood, of the soul kind, that I have found and re-created my own power. When we succeed in gathering to share + learn, so does the world. ⠀
⠀
This is my WHY behind Girls Gone Roadie. ⠀
⠀
xx,⠀⠀

Stay tuned tomorrow for the big launch of #GirlsGoneRoadie - a community blog for women, by women who live to explore + create to inspire. ⠀

"I’m not a person who gives up that easily, even when things seem impossible. I like the feeling of exploring my potential, and to be able to do that, I know that I have to give all I have."⠀
⠀
A quote from one of our original female inspirations, @rannveigaamodt pulled from her Get Profiled Q + A. Women who push their limits through exploration, creativity + adventure inspire us. One thing we learned from Rannveig is that no matter how successful or big you become, there's always room to make time to connect, inspire + empower your fellow sisters to follow their truths. Just 2 days until the launch of #GIRLSGONEROADIE, a community contributed blog + movement for women, by women going live on StrandedonLand.com this coming Thursday. Stay tuned.⠀

Couple new things: I dyed my hair brown, and I’m super close to Fly Boy Sit. If it’s never going to snow I’m just going to climb my life away! ( which isn’t so bad ) 📸 @joolyhart

Fresh hinenihii (moose in Arapaho) scat. We love scat tracking at QN. You can tell a lot about the ecological relations of a creature who deposits them. This is a beautiful example of winter hinenihii scat. What qualities do you notice about the material (swipe for close-up)? 📍Arapaho & Ute territories #queerscout #queersinnature #queertracker #queersinthewild #queersinthewoods #queernature #queerwildernessproject #womenswilderness #publiclandisnativeland #decolonizenatureconnection #natureconnection #earthqueer #earthconnection #arapaho #northernarapaho #queer #wildlifetracking #animaltracks #earthskills #ancestralskills #alcesalces #moose #diversifyoutdoors #optoutside #scatology #scat #wildernessculture

Our first tracking series for the Queer Wilderness Project was amazing! 15 minutes into the field, we were walking parallel to a two year old hinenihii (moose in Arapaho). We ended up observing her for a distance while she relaxingly ate aspen saplings in our presence. After she departed, we got to see her freshly made tracks—including scat—in the snow [photo in next post]. So grateful for this encounter with this young hinenihii, an incredible tracking teacher. Here is a photo of So @borealfaun with some moose sign on biitno’ (so-called Aspen). How do you think the moose made this sign?
