Started out springy today and ended up kinda wintry: so, Brussels sprouts! Browning the sprouts in a little bit of garlic, topping them with a sprinkling of pecorino Romano and a spritz of lemon rendered them very nice indeed.
March is the ultimate shoulder season for market-driven cooks. Unlike October when you can still get some amazing tomatoes and zucchini, March is all about what’s next. Here in NY, we see our West Coast compatriots snapping up strawberries, asparagus and all the greens. Is it possible to have berry-induced FOMO? We have cabbage. And roots. So many root vegetables. I heard someone call the farmers market “muffin season”. But truly, if you think about it, this is the time when our creativity can soar. And I would argue those strawberries (in May) will taste even sweeter to us. Until then, I’m roasting my parsnips and carrots in a cast iron.
Quick spin around the Balcony tonight before nightfall to pick a few Capsicums for Capsicum Relish.
Autumn is making its presence felt on the Balcony with a change in the quality of light, cooler morning starts and the browning and falling of leaves from the #nevergoingtofruit apple trees.
I know I have said it before but I really must get cracking on seeding the Winter veges. Read somewhere today that Australia will experience its coldest Winter yet following the pattern of the northern hemisphere's Bomb Cycle and Beast from the East...but I'll be convinced when I see it. Last Winter was the warmest we'd had in a long while.
Bon vendredi ! 💚
There is a saying in French that says "we don't mingle carrots and cabbages". Nonsense, of course we do and we do not regret it !
Grilled Brussels sprouts-coloured carots-potatoes
Happy Friday !
I’ve left all the tubers in the ground and hope for a larger harvest this year. During the frost last week I put the pot in the greenhouse. Yesterday I put everything out again and I saw the first leaves already. The tubers have a nutty taste🌱
