What is the cheesiest thing some people do when they go to France? Pull out their stripy top, as it's very French!
The stripy lines are called Breton Stripes, and were original worn by mariners as the block pattern of stripes made it easier to spot a man overboard against the waves.
The original design had 21 stripes, one for each of Napoleons victories, but today I don't think people count them.
The Breton stripes are one of those fashionable items that is always popular, with everyone - men, women, babies & grannies. #pfw#paris#history#culture
In the 1800s, male prisoners were made to wear black and white stripes, it looks like it was done to represent the enclosure of the cell, and of course easier to spot them if they tried to do a runner!
