Happy St. Patrick’s Day! It seems appropriate to wrap up the week with a lesson on New York’s first St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The official name of this church is now the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. It was raised up to a basilica on March 17, 2010, and is now the Pope’s parish in Manhattan. The cathedral first opened in 1815 as an Irish parish. It was the center of gang violence from nativists in the mid-19th century. Archbishop John Hughes was able to successfully protect the church with the brick walls around the cemeteries. The Ancient Order of Hibernians was called in, holes were cut in the brick walls for guns to point through, and brick throwers were prepared on the rooftops nearby. These anti-Irish gangs were successful in burning down twelve Catholic Churches from New York to Philadelphia. And although they were unsuccessful in burning this one down, a small candle fell over in 1866 and burned the entire wood interior of the church. At this point, the cornerstone for a new St. Pat’s had already been laid, and it gave them a reason to expedite the construction of the new cathedral. They used cast iron materials on the interior at this location because it was cheaper and faster to build. When the new cathedral was finished uptown, this became a simple parish church. .
Beneath this cathedral is one of the best kept secrets in New York. There are catacombs below this cathedral! And the only way to see them is to take a private tour with @Tommysnewyork. I’m one of only a few guides who gives this tour. They are available to see at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm every day. If you want to see me, come in on the weekends!

An Irishman’s Philosophy: “In life, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about— Either you will get well or you will die. If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you die, there are only two things to worry about— Either you will go to heaven or hell. If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.
And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends You won’t have time to worry!”
