Also North Orange #cemetery ...another open #tomb like so many small /rural #newenglandcemeteries have from before refrigerated morgues or funeral homes. As opposed to permanent family tombs, these were for temporary public use. If someone died in #winter they would be stored in their coffins inside of a tomb like this until they could be buried in the Spring. Inside is a step down to a single chamber, usually. Sometimes there are stairs. All of these rock slabs are hand cut. Door is slate. Hinges are hand tooled iron, usually. Sometimes the door is just wood. This one has some granite support columns inside.
