Thunderstorms form as warm moist air pushes upwards and rapidly cools and condenses to form a cumulonimbus cloud. As precipitation occurs it forces a cold downdraft which causes the wind formation often associated with such storms. They most often occur in the tropics and subtropics and categorized as single, multi-cell, multi-cluster lines or super cells. Thunderstorms are known for throwing tornadoes and waters spouts too due to their often circular nature.
Thunderstorms can release 10^15 joules of energy which exceeds tropical cyclones and a nuclear bomb blast. It is why they are so chaotically dangerous.
