Climbing Corcovado K2, Rio de Janeiro - a beautiful day for one last ‘adventurinho’ in Rio. You may know Corcovado as “the Christ the Redeemer statue mountain”, but this 710m-high pile of granite rising vertical out of the Tijuca Atlantic rainforest is also host to some amazing climbing over Rio.
K2 runs up the east face of Corcovado. It’s rated US outdoor grade 5.8-5.9 and involves a range of climbing techniques including crack, slab, friction, “crimpy”, and horizontal traverses. The route begins at 500m elevation off a wild hiking trail in the Tijuca forest and takes you the remaining 200m literally to the top of the Cristo statue viewing platform. It’s usually climbed in 4-5 pitches but the hardest part is actually the first 10 min when you start onto the rock off the first crack. On this climb my partner Mingo also took a few pictures of me where you can see some of the “holds” from above.
In my ~5 months spent in Rio over the years this climb would be my top-endorsed thing to do if you’re active and into outdoors. The feeling of hanging off that nearly vertical, iconic Rio rock over the city is incredible. Your views are first of Sugarloaf and Urca, Botafogo and Flamengo just beyond the rainforest; then as you traverse across the rock in the second half of the climb you round the corner to views of Lagoa and Zona Sul, Copa and Ipanema. You climb out of the rainforest to, and then over, the passing clouds and the many helicopters that ply the sky ending at 700m over the city to faint echoes of samba drums beneath you (as well as gunshots). There are a couple small ledges you can belay from but for nearly all of the climb you’re hanging off the rock, alone with the sounds and the views of Rio.
The funniest part of the climb is that you summit literally at the lip of the statue platform railing (the round platform everybody goes to take their pictures) and you climb OVER like an escaped wild jungle person out of nowhere to a crowd of bewildered faces.
