SO HUNGRY!!! lentil and tomato soup + super greens sandwich. Lentils to bulk up and keep me full for longer 👌
I do have a massive bone to pick with ready made soups though. WHY do they all have sugar in them!?!?!?!? Even the 'healthy' ones have sugar listed on the ingredients and it's SO UNNECESSARY. I mean I guess it's a preservative and also it does bind all the flavours, but it is absolutely not an ingredient that should be in ALL soups. Even this super healthy looking sandwich has sugar in it, even though the traffic light is green for sugar. Why??? No wonder we're all eating too much sugar, when it's in ALL the available food!!!! #systemchange#ourbuiltenvironment#food#fuckcorporateinterest#sugarsmart#sugarsmartuk#sugarsmartBANES#soup#sandwich#onthego @sainsburys #sugar
Starting the day with pimped out Branflakes, incense, singing, and sunshine because it's #internationalwomensday and self care is important! I woke up feeling absolutely not 100% and just really 'meh', but after a shower and now this, I'm feeling much better and ready to be my best self today - and no that doesn't mean setting high standards for myself! Just being ok with how I'm doing is a good place to be 😎
Happy international women's day to all the incredible women I know and to all the people who have shown me the value and strength of female friendships.
Veggie wraps for dinner and breakfast! Homemade hummus, salad leaves, mange tout, and marinated sun dried med veg.
I'm off to Portsmouth today for a conference on Transport and Health - how to redesign urban environments to encourage walking and cycling, improve air quality, benefit people's mental health, and reduce pressures on national health services, among other things. Looking forward to a day of being a sponge and absorbing all the info!!! #sugarsmart#sugarsmartuk#sugarsmartBANES#vegan#wraps#dinner#breakfast#conference#work#train
Go on @sainsburys ! Finally there is a vegan version of the pesto pasta pot! And it ain't bad (just a little oily...). I've been super on the go and here there and everywhere recently so haven't been making much fresh stuff! But hopefully I'll get a chance to get back to that soon 😊
Still, lots of sugar smart vegan options out there!
Best day ever with my fave gal!!! Spontaneous day of doing whatever we damn well pleased, starting with am absurd breakfast at @vxbristol (vegan junk food 🦄). I had mac and cheese and a hell dog, Anneli had the breakfast wrap and chicken nuggets (yes all 100% veegz). Then I tackled this freak shake. I've never had one before. And yes, I know I am 'sugar smart jess' and this is 100% not sugar smart BUT every once in a while it's good for the soul to do something crazy, and this mint chocolate shake definitely was crazy!
Being sugar smart isn't about being super hard on yourself all the time or feeling like you have to justify that pudding that you had. It's about being aware of how much sugar you're consuming, especially in places you might not expect, like baked beans, or supposedly 'healthy' foods like cereal and their snack bar equivalent. Everything is balance hey.
This day was absolutely full of giggles and silliness and was just the absolute one. Thank youuuu to this goddess (or should I say queen ✉📝) of a woman who just makes my life more sunshine-y 🌞🌞🌞 #sugarsmart#sugarsmartuk#sugarsmartBANES#vegan#whatveganseat#veganbristol#bristolvegans#veganjunkfood#goddess#sunshine#happiness#vibes#women
This was one motherflippin sexy sandwich... I got my vegan grilled cheese (tesco jalapeño one), with spicy dahl hummus (from waitrose), smushed it together with this grilled kale, olive and tomato, all on beautiful spelt sourdough 👌👌👌👌👌 and ate it with vegan garlic mayo and a salad bowl (lettuce, tomato, artichoke, spring onions). SO AMAZING. Eat ya heart out @thegreenbirdcafe - if you got some vegan cheese in you could create this masterpiece too! 🐦🐥 #sugarsmart#sugarsmartuk#sugarsmartBANES#vegan#whatveganseat#grilledcheese#dinner#hype#masterpiece#badass#foodporn
I was hank marvin after that early start and all the brain work, thinking about how to bring about a low carbon south west! There was lots of lovely fruit at the event, but otherwise just bacon, sausage or egg sandwiches - no thanks!!! So I treated myself to this red pepper, hummus and vegan cheese flatbread from @groundedcafebars Keynsham. I had a hankering for a cheese toastie and this hit the spot. Never thought I'd be coming from Bristol to keynsham to get the vegan food I want! 😂 fair play keynsham, fair play.
Now, time to get back to the office!
Going to a 'low carbon south west' breakfast meeting. I wonder what the spread will be! *definitely not salivating over thoughts of continental breakfasts*
I just moved a bee so it wouldn't get squished at the train station, and he tried to sting me. Good lesson in not being attached to the outcome of your actions. 🐝 bee unattached to the fruits of your labours.
I just made these savoury biscuits! Super tasty and basically can be your humble steed for carrying condiments, ALTHOUGH they are pretty good as they come!
Ingredients: gf flour, almond meal, Nooch, fresh rosemary, salt, pepper, hot paprika, mixed seeds (sunflower, flax, pumpkin, chia), water, rapeseed oil, and oats. Then just roll em out and bake them for a little while 😊
The boat is SO warm now! So cosy and full of biscuits and goodness. I'm super happy with these too cos I get through oat cakes at an alarming rate (dipping them in peanut butter duh) and they're wrapped in so much plastic 😣 so this way I can happily snack without worrying about where that plastic packaging will end up.
This, I believe, is called 'ants on a log'... basically ya put peanut butter on a banana and pop some raisins on there too 🐜 guess it does look kind of like ants on a log... Just had a chunk of cucumber and an easy peeler too 🍊 after a total body conditioning class at the gym followed by my first lil solo yoga session on the pontoon at the marina. Stretches at the end of gym classes are never thorough enough for me, so I always like to do some extra. It's so mild out tonight that I could stretch under a lovely blanket of cloud 😊
So I'm feeling much better than earlier, and I think a hot shower is gna be just the ticket now 🤗 but I was in a super rotten mood earlier, and not gna deny eating 5 of the Lazy Day free from tiffin bites, which is probably about 37g sugar and definitely NOT sugar smart. The adult recommended daily maximum is 30g... so gimme a slap on the wrist for my namesake and I'll start again tomorrow. No food shaming here, only observing and trying to avoid big corporations attempts to make money by making us sick. 😷🤒🤕 Anyway, lesson of the day: if you're feeling foul, get out and about and get your body moving. Fermenting ain't gna make ya feel better.
Much love to anyone else who's been in a super funk today 🐥 hope tomorrow is better for ya 🌄
New fave. This one's a game changer. Tastes like delicious coffee brownie 😍 still just wna eat carbs all day long so I just had pasta salad for lunch with some antipasti to jazz it up a bit ☺ sometimes carbs are just what ya need.
Couldn't decide what to have for lunch at @thegreenbirdcafe today so I'm having porridge with avo toast. Even though I eat porridge most days. This one is super creamy and moreish, served with granola and compote because I am truly indecisive today.
Sweet potato falafel salad for lunch today.... 🌿
For galentines day yesterday I shared a 20" pizza with my favourite Spanish chicka, and it was OUTRAGEOUS. one slice was bigger than our heads. Ridiculous. And delicious. I wish I could eat it again. Not feeling the same about the gin and red wine though... 🍷🍕
V day doesn't have to be all about chocolates when there's pizza 😁
Boom baby! Here is proof that you can totally do a sugar free, vegan, gluten free pancake day REALLY EASILY!
Pancakes: oats, banana, soy milk. Toppings: peanut butter (obviously), raspberries, blueberries, coconut, and this sweet little revelation that is @sweetfreedomuk choc pots, which have no sugar in them! Just carob, fruits, cocoa, water and oil 😊 ~~~~~~~
Primo supremo!!! And I've got enough for savoury pancakes for lunch tomorrow, probably with roasted cauliflower, kale, mushrooms and tofu. ~~~~~~~
Feeling pretty smug and happy right now, after a day of funk. Turns out all I needed was a quick walk in the evening sun, a chat on the phone to my nearest and dearest, and a few lil pancakes 😋 life throws us curve balls, but each time we learn how to handle them a little better 🤗
Made and ate lots of great food over the weekend with me chums! On Saturday we had homemade tagliatelle (thanks to the Italian housemate who has changed my life with this knowledge!) with slow cooked veggie and red wine bolognese. And only-slighty-burnt-i-swear homemade garlic bread, to use up old baguettes and lots of fresh garlic and basil 😊
The next day I made us all a hangover breakfast with organic seeded wholemeal toast, fried mushrooms, spinach, pepper, leek and garlic, potato waffles, veggie sausage, and homemade beans with butter beans and tomato passata (with spices). It was bloody good I've gotta say. Saw us right through til dinner, which was a mash up - leftovers curry with fresh ginger and lemon, served with roasted herby potatoes. ---------------
So satisfied by this weekend, and I so enjoyed the lovely sun today! Looking forward to having pancakes tomorrow 😁 hope y'all are ready for it!
The rain is softly pitter pattering on the roof, I'm covered in blankets and feeling belly-warm from the lovely peanut butter porridge. With sunflower, flax, and chia seeds, peanut butter, almond meal, dessicated coconut, cinnamon, a sprinkle of pink salt, rice milk, and some crumbs of leftover Christmas cake (I know it's February! I want to savor this one for as long as poss, my mumma made it sugar free for me 😇). Just had a lovely cuppa and I've got Aretha Franklin on to brighten up my morning on this dark day.
Mucking around in charity shop changing rooms on my lunch break 🛍 grateful for the distraction 😊
P.S. this sugar smart stuff isn't about losing weight, body shaming, dieting, or any of that negative shiz. It's about being aware of what money-making corps are trying to feed us under the guise of it being 'healthy'. Spoiler alert - they don't have our best interests at heart.
Same story for female shaving products and lots of sanitary products. (Shout out to @mooncupltd for normalising periods and reducing plastic waste and nasty chemicals inside girls and women!) Reclaim ownership, listen to your body, enjoy life.
Still trying to process Calais. The transition from tangible real helpful work, to doing my job in an office... is hard.
Last night was eating bagels with a good friend. This is how he organised his. We call it the meze bagel - cucumber, hummus, tofu, and vegan cream cheese.
This @sweetfreedomuk choc pot is a game changer. Found it in Sainsburys the other day and it's got no added sugar in it! Just natural fruit extracts, apples, grapes and carob, water, cocoa, natural flavourings, and sunflower oil.
Bang it on an oatcake with some peanut butter (and banana if you're lucky) and you're good to go!
I'm off to calais today to work at the refugee community kitchen for a few days. So expect big curries and stews for around 1000 people. There are still around 700-800 refugees in Calais, even though the jungle has been destroyed. There are facing police brutality every day, tents are not allowed so they are all trying to find cover in the nearby woods, and the refugee kitchen is pretty much the only support they are getting.
You can donate to them online if you feel sufficiently motivated to. It's a sad sad situation. Around 64million people worldwide are considered refugees. We haven't seen numbers like this since WW2, and now many more countries have borders, making it harder to travel and work.
There's lots about this online, and I highly recommend Ai Wei Wei's film 'Human Flow', which is all about human movement around the globe. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
So this was a pretty weird meal not gonna lie... I started off pretty normal... roasted veggies (sweet potato, pepper, tenderstem broccoli, courgette, mushroom, green beans), + cous cous with passata and kale and spices... pretty normal right??? Hmmm... here is the dubious bit... peanut butter, hot sauce and Nooch... is that a faux pas? hahaha we can't all be winners all the time! It satisfied my hungry self anyway!
