There's an instrument called a hurdy-gurdy. And we learned about it on our trip to northern Spain! We were most surprised that it sounded similar to bagpipes.
The instrument may be more popular in Europe and at folk music festivals than in the US, but leave a comment if you have more info!
Here's more info from wikipedia: "The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses tangents—small wedges, typically made of wood—against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board and hollow cavity to make the vibration of the strings audible.
Very talented DC-based harpist Kim Sator played a beautiful rendition of "What a Wonderful World" to a captivated audience! It was a magical moment! Thank you for organizing this event @blackcatdc & @janelandanthony !
