I had the incredible opportunity to be part of a small team of consultants with EXOS that helped Coach Mendenhall build a foundation of seamless integration between the sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and the football staff one summer back in 2011 at BYU.

It was an amazing opportunity to use my skills to not only help the athletes but to help bridge the gap between the weight room and the athletic training room.

I will never forget how shocked the AD was to see me,an AT, in the weight room helping out.
✨
When preventing and rehabilitating injuries what goes on in the weight room can not be ignored or treated as separate.it is imperative to have an athlete centered model and all sports performance professionals work together towards one goal.

Row variations and when to use them

Rows are arguably the best and most versatile back exercise; this is because it utilizes both shoulder extension and scapular retraction focusing on the lats and traps/rhomboids. We also get a great isometric contraction in the back extensors.  The reasons rows are so versatile is because changing the angle of the shoulder can emphasize different muscle groups because of the line of pull muscles. For example if your shoulder is at 90degrees and you’re performing horizontal extension it would be hard for the lats to kick in.

There are a lot of row variations but ill cover the most common ones, the dumbbell lat row (top left)is great at targeting the lat and traps, you can further isolate the lats by locking the scapula in place and focusing on the extension component.

Next is the rear delt row which has the dumbbell at a higher position with the palm facing towards the body. In this position we are able to isolate the rear delt, we can incorporate more traps or less by varying the amount of protraction done by the shoulder blades. Be careful to keep shoulder blades tucked back and down as at higher angles the space in shoulder can be limited due to bony anatomy.

Lastly the barbell row, there are two variations of this exercise over hand grip and under hand, my rules for this exercises is over hand is trap, underhand is lat. The barbell variation allows for more weight to be done compared to dumbbell variations. This leads to a greater isometric isometric loading on the back extensors. .

Technique Tuesday this week comes from the kitchen!! 🍽

Two years ago when in Sri Lanka I tasted Kottu, a street food dish there. It was delicious! 😋

I have had a few attempts at making Kottu myself but yesterday's dinner and today's lunch was by far my best attempt. 🖐🏻👌🏻 So what you'll need for Kottu......... ▪️3 cooked chicken breast shredded. 🐔
▪️One large onion diced
▪️5 cloves crushed
▪️Chinese spices
▪️100g shredded carrot 🥕
▪️100g shredded cabbage
▪️100g shredded leek
▪️Half cup of scallions
▪️Cherry tomatoes quartered 🍅 ▪️Salt n Pepper for seasoning ▪️Egg 🥚 
There are a few alternatives you can add to you Kottu and you will find these on many recipes online, like ginger, chillis etc.

A main part of a Kottu is Roti. Roti is an Indian 🇮🇳 bread easily bought or made at home. Once your main dish is made, chop up your Roti and add. 🚫 Kottu Method

Season onion and garlic in Chinese 5 spices and fry until softened. Add chicken, cabbage, carrot and leek for a few minutes until vegetables soften. Then add tomatoes and taste.......season with salt and pepper as required. Add your Roti and simmer for a few mins. While simmering, crack an egg on a different pain and make a nice juicey egg!! Serve Kottu mixture in a bowl 🥣 and sprinkle with scallion before placing fried egg on top.

Enjoy!! 😋

This is not 'perfect' Kottu (before the food police come calling) 🚨 👮🏻 but it is delicious!! Technique Tuesday this week comes from the kitchen!! 🍽 Two years ago when in Sri Lanka I tasted Kottu, a street food dish there. It was delicious! 😋 I have had a few attempts at making Kottu myself but yesterday's dinner and today's lunch was by far my best attempt. 🖐🏻👌🏻 So what you'll need for Kottu......... ▪️3 cooked chicken breast shredded. 🐔 ▪️One large onion diced ▪️5 cloves crushed ▪️Chinese spices ▪️100g shredded carrot 🥕 ▪️100g shredded cabbage ▪️100g shredded leek ▪️Half cup of scallions ▪️Cherry tomatoes quartered 🍅 ▪️Salt n Pepper for seasoning ▪️Egg 🥚 There are a few alternatives you can add to you Kottu and you will find these on many recipes online, like ginger, chillis etc. A main part of a Kottu is Roti. Roti is an Indian 🇮🇳 bread easily bought or made at home. Once your main dish is made, chop up your Roti and add. 🚫 Kottu Method Season onion and garlic in Chinese 5 spices and fry until softened. Add chicken, cabbage, carrot and leek for a few minutes until vegetables soften. Then add tomatoes and taste.......season with salt and pepper as required. Add your Roti and simmer for a few mins. While simmering, crack an egg on a different pain and make a nice juicey egg!! Serve Kottu mixture in a bowl 🥣 and sprinkle with scallion before placing fried egg on top. Enjoy!! 😋 This is not 'perfect' Kottu (before the food police come calling) 🚨 👮🏻 but it is delicious!! First time at trying a MHR test on an indoor rower today.
Based on my recent 2000m pace I had 6 targets to hit every 4 minutes then 1 minute rest and then a final 4 minute target. 
I can definitely say mine isn't 162bpm. I must try harder next, I thought I was working hard this time mind you!! I should also do it fresh, rested and after a good 8hrs sleep, I can't see that ever happening then. 
Anyway might try it again next week.

@business17 and I have been working on some hip progressions for the past few weeks. Last night, during this lateral leg-over exercise we changed the placement of her contact knee to align it more under her shoulder rather than center mass. This placed more force on both her external hip rotators and abductors by effectively lengthening the lever of her working leg (it also produces a fun core stabilization dynamic and causes the opposite glute to fire.) As soon as we made this change we created a compensation error, where she would immediately drop her elbow to allow her pelvis to tilt laterally to clear the kettlebell. 
We tried different coaching cues (drive the left palm into the floor, pretend like you're balancing a tray of drinks on your lower back, etc...) all to no avail. This is not a mobility problem, because she was thoroughly warmed up and can clear that same height without compensating when the contact knee goes back to center mass. Also, the compensation effectively disappears when she internally rotates her hip and performs the same motion. By ruling out those first two issues and considering the third, the probable cause that we're left with is that she has a strength deficiency somewhere in her external hip rotators. 
Why does that matter? Because weakness in those muscles is often a contributing factor both to non-contact knee injuries as well as lower back pain. Unfortunately, these are both issues that this powerhouse athlete and veteran skater has dealt with over the years. 
What will we do to try to strengthen those weaknesses? Keep watching and find out. 😉

Here we have my ever improving client @ahsenrazzaq .

He is an aspiring fast bowler (cricket) and over the last few weeks we've been working on key areas a fast bowler needs to perform at their best.

In this exercise, Ahsen is effectively performing a very similar movement to what he'd do when on the pitch.

His core stays absolutely still, rock hard, keeping him stable whilst he drives his arm forward with power.

Every week he's improving and I fear for the batsman facing him as he bowls that ball towards them!

Taking aspects of what keeps athletes healthy also work for the average adult. Want to take less trips while carrying groceries or have to carry a heavy briefcase for work? Do more farmer walks. Here are TRX rows, every athlete needs a strong abdominal wall, strong back & stable shoulders. But so do adults every time you start your lawn mower, pick something off the floor or even open a door. 2 different types of clients with different goals but can work in the same session because of what we believe functional to mean

1️⃣Time under tension: if you do 3 fast sets for a muscle group don’t expect to wake up as Arnold.
2️⃣Quality reps might be obvious but crucial. Think about how many people you see with horrendous form doing dumbbell single arm rows on a bench. Always lock in positioning before your first rep.

This is my friend Michael, we’ve been training together about 18 months now and it’s crazy watching him improve! He loves strength training and is always so stoked to lift, it’s awesome training and seeing him get stronger! 
He just completed a 50lb bench press 💪🏻 and I couldn’t be more proud. We work on range of motion, strength training, and learning new exercises together. Can’t wait to see what else he can accomplish!!
