WARNING: I’m about to go on a long rant. And it’s probably going to piss some people off.
Pictured here is a statue of some person from some time ago from some European culture. (I didn’t have to search very hard to find a naked statue of a women). Here’s my problem. This is considered ok. It’s art. It’s history. It’s beautiful. I can remember seeing statues like these, both male and female and thinking, “How in the hell does someone even make that shit?” Not, OH MY GOD ITS A NAKED HUMAN IM SCARED FOR LIFE.
A huge topic these days is still equality (even though you’d think we’d be way past this since my grandmother dealt with this in her adult years, decades ago.) But nonetheless, 2018, And we still can’t get over it. Fun fact, the first bras weren’t invented by women. Another fun fact, people used to bathe, publicly, together, naked. 😱 and no. One. Gave. A. Shit.
The human body is an amazing creation of cells that turn into bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, and blood, that are all inside a beautiful wrapping called SKIN. That’s all it is. Skin.
But it’s a huge problem. For a woman, to show any skin, besides her arms, legs, and face. Don’t lift up your shirt and show off the progress on your abs. Don’t hike up your shorts cause you think you got a cute butt. Don’t do it.
@si_swimsuit just launched their “In Her Own Words,” project. Where women stripped down to their rawest form and painted their bodies in words that encased who they were. That explained what was important and empowering to them. Then they, keeping the main parts covered, posed for a shoot.
The backlash this caused is appalling. These women are being told that they are the reason that women world wide can’t gain respect. That what they’re doing is distasteful.
But yet, we celebrate statues, like this, that give full frontal views of the human anatomy. And don’t bat an eye. Double standard? I believe so.
Yes, I have no idea who this statue lady is. But in all honesty, I’m never going to know the girls that partook in that project. We need to stop critiquing anyone from being proud of their bodies, critiquing women for showing some skin and we need to grow up.
