When I was a kid going to #AlamedaElementary in Downey in the '70s, all the sidewalks had these contractor's stamps in the sidewalk. Much like the cracks kids won't step on, our local custom was that these entire slabs of concrete were not to be stepped on. These were the monkey squares. To step in the monkey squares while walking to school with a group of fellow students was to reveal yourself as careless, unthinking, unworthy of respect. "You stepped in the monkey square!!" The derision of one's peers was loud and instantaneous.
I don't see monkey squares much any more, but I found one today near work. I still didn't step in it. Deep down, I'm still a conformist.
