#tbt to October in the #boundarywaters --it's the largest wilderness area east of the Rockies and the most-visited #wilderness area in the US. More than 250,000 BWCA visitors contribute $850 million to the local economy, supporting 18,000 jobs.
Sounds like the wrong place for a new copper mine. A 2012 study showed that 💯% of American copper mines leached toxic waste. The Boundary Waters is a network of lakes and streams, so mining just outside the Wilderness area would flow into this protected and pristine area.
The mine in question belongs to Antofagasta, a Chilean mining conglomerate with many environmental sanctions in its home country. The owner of Antofagasta happens to own the Kalorama home that Jered & Ivanka Kushner are leasing. His mining project has suddenly been greenlighted in a policy change overruling environmental impact studies. #javanka •

We’re smiling, but little did we know that we’d be freezing our asses off in a soaked tent without seeing the sun or having enough food for the next 4 days in the wilderness. Also every single thing we owned was soaked in cooking oil from a broken cap. That’s best man material right there @jakebeyer474 and I literally can’t wait to go back. These are the physical and spiritual experiences I live for and what only untouched wilderness can provide.
"Wilderness to the people of America is a spiritual necessity, an antidote to the high pressure of modern life, a means of regaining serenity and equilibrium." - Sigurd F. Olson .
Bikes, books and a boat, oh my! Learn about @freemanexplore next #savethebwca adventure: #PedaltoDC#Repost @freemanexplore ・・・
Folks keep asking us, “what’s next?” Well, today we are excited to officially announce our next adventure advocacy project, Pedal to DC: A Book Tour to Save the Boundary Waters! We will be biking 1,750 miles across nine states between April 20 and June 18. The tour will bring renewed awareness of the efforts underway to protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from sulfide-ore copper mining. We will also share our critically acclaimed book: A Year in the Wilderness.
We will depart by bicycle near ground zero of the proposed Twin Metals mine just outside of Ely, Minnesota on April 20 and will arrive in Washington D.C. on June 18. With the help of @milkweed_books , @savethebwca , and many other partners, we are organizing 30 events at bookstores, libraries, outdoor stores, colleges, breweries, community centers, and other venues in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and many more communities all along our route.
2018 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act of 1978 and we hope you will use Pedal to DC as a way to celebrate and protect our public lands during this momentous year. Follow us, share our posts with your friends, come sign the signature canoe we will tow behind our bikes, help host or promote an event in your area, read our book and share it with your friends, and alert people you know along our route that we are pedaling their way. When we all speak loudly for this quiet place our collective voices will be heard and sulfide-ore copper mining will not be allowed in the watershed of our nation’s most popular Wilderness.

We’re excited to be presenting at @canoecopia this weekend in Madison, WI! Huge thanks out to @sportsmenbwca, not only for the sweet lid and pint glass, but for all the hard work you and @bha_mn are doing speaking for us sportsmen against the proposed copper nickel mine near the #BWCA . For any of you interested in supporting either of these groups, check out their pages. This isn't just a Minnesota thing. It's a preserving one of the wildest places in the country thing. #savethebwca#supportsolidgroups#FUpolymet
Today is the LAST day that the USFS is accepting public input on the draft permit for PolyMet’s open pit sulfide mine proposed for northern Minnesota. This mine puts the environment at major risk of major pollution for generations to come. Please, please, please take a moment to head on over to @savethebwca to sign the petition - also have the link in my profile!

Hey! This is your last chance to sign the petition to the US Forest Service. Please follow the link in our bio to speak loudly for this quiet place (just like Iris the sled dog). #savethebwca#bwcaw#wilderness
