(Lysmata amboinensis) has set up a “MASH” unit where he cleans parasites and dead tissue from his fishy tank mates. So far, a juvenile clown tang (who’s a bit of an asshole) has taken up most of his time. (The 2 colorful fish passing by are a pair of fairy wrasses.) They have an interesting behavior too; they wrap themselves in a mucus cocoon when they sleep.

Week 2 -3 (end)
The tank is finally showing some growth of diatoms (brown algae). I chose to add 2 small hardy green chromis (damselfish sp.) (highly debated) to add ammonia into the tank and speed up the cycling process, essentially if I was not introducing ammonia via ghost feeding or live fish into the tank the beneficial bacteria that we are trying to build have nothing to feed on and die. ———————————————————————————
Also added an aquarium heater to help bring up tank temperature to a stable 78-79 F degrees. ———————————————————————————
During the end of week two we can see a diatom bloom (brown algae). Diatoms are a normal part of tank "cycling" and are an indicator that the tank is coming to a near end of its cycling process . This brown algae will essentially die off or be eaten by CUC (clean up crew, snails, hermits, crabs, etc.) Seachem stability was added (essentially nitrifying bacteria in a bottle). My ammonia readings are also not measurable because the nitrosomona bacteria have essentially colonized enough to convert ammonia into nitrite, the nitrite levels currently read ~0.25 ppm or mg/l. The nitrites should rise rapidly before dropping and being converted effectively into nitrate by the nictrobacter bacteria.
The rock thats coming to life (live rock) will then partially help release nitrogen gas via bubbles(shown in pic)
The wavemaker was added to ensure proper flow and aeration throughout the tank to reduce "deadspots" or areas that are not getting enough flow in the tank.
——————————————————————————— A protein skimmer was also set in the sump/refugium (tank beneath the tank) but not turned on until later on in week 4 because I dont want to kill any beneficial bacteria that are colonizing the rock. In theory you can turn on the skimmer, but in my experience it just slows down the cycling process because it removes decaying organic compounds before they are broken down and reused in the nitrogen cycle.
