As we approached #indiagatedelhi we #witnessed some #older women #frantically running. One of them #tripped over and fell on the floor with all her goods. Some of them stopped to help her. She must have been #60 years old and badly hurt her knee so I #rushed to help her up & as i did a man with a #camera stopped in his tracks & stepped aside, the women looked afraid but relived to talk to us. I asked why she was running, the other #woman standing with a new born said they are running from the under cover police. So i asked why and she said #sarcastically "because by us selling our goods for a few pennies is making him poor, he threw all my goods in the river and didn't even think twice that I have a new born to feed". I couldn't understand why from all the vendors they were running & then I recalled that women are most vulnerable but if they are poor, they have a double wammi. Soon a man with a stick appeared and approached the women whilst shouting, he #immediately stopped when he saw us, he figured we were foreigners. Then #randomly and #repeatedly started to say "what?! I came from the other direction" as if to justify his actions & defend himself that he is not the cause of these women running and one falling. The women confirmed they were running from him. I stood with them for a while until I felt satisfied he had left the site.
I was #heartbroken by this reminder that this is a country of real hustle.
I made eye contact with these to younger women & when they approached me to sell me something I gave them what ever they asked for. As I didn't want to just hand them the money because they are vendors, and so I went on to make conversation. They come from Rajasthan & at home they sleep on the streets. I asked for their permission to take a picture as I would if I was in the UK.
Don't #assume it's okay to take pictures in #developing countries, where possible ask for #consent or at least let them know. Consent is a choice and is, making a choice is #empowering .
We carried on our evening and noticed the same man using his stick to threaten & damage vendors good.
