There are things I did on this trip that were foolish. Like when I managed to get the Wing to the top of one of the Big Horn Mountains. When you're there and you're in the moment you can't see it. You see the rut you're about to hit and the one 25 feet up the trail. You see the week worth of bugs on your windscreen while trying to pick the best lines in the gravel. It's in those moments when the focus makes you loose the bigger picture. During the ride from New Orleans to Florida I lost the big picture to the focus. Because of that, it was one of the most dangerous rides I've done.
I didn’t even get on the road until 4:00, but it was only supposed to be a 3-4 hour ride. It wasn’t, by the time I started it was lightly raining and it soon it became apparent that what I was riding through was nothing short of a tropical storm coming off the Gulf. Cars slowed down and put on their hazards with visibility no more than 100 yards. For me it was even harder to see, my windscreen is tinted and my clear visor broke the second week of the trip leaving me with only my tinted sun visor. The only way I could even manage to see where I was going was to follow the tail lights of the tractor-trailer in front of me. It was at that point I should’ve gotten off the highway and sought an alternate camp side for the night. I didn’t, I decided to foolishly keep going. When traffic slowed to a crawl due to the inevitable accident I found myself stuck in miles of stop and go traffic sitting on a bike soaked to the very core. I could only take so much until I started to lane split… in the rain. When I finally got a few miles from where I intended to camp, I had been riding in various levels of rain for six hours. When I finally reached my destination I set up my tent, removed all my wet clothes and laid on my air pad. I woke up in the morning still naked in the same position; I never managed to get dry clothes back on. I managed to get to my destination safely, but I still consider that day one of the most dangerous and reckless days of the trip.
This one won't be in Facebook, it's not a story my mom would want to read. She wouldn't think I'd be so reckless. I wouldn't have either.
I have just arrived in Ficksburg, a short drive away from the Lesotho border. I am totally exhausted - have been driving since 930AM and it was 1950 when I arrived here. By the time I got to Colesberg I started thinking that I should drive a bit more so I doubled the fun and instead of stopping in Colesberg I took a “short” detour towards the Lesotho border to check out the mountains. The photos speak for themselves: I literally saw every colour in the spectrum in the sky today: the most peculiar was the yellow sky with the rainbow in the middle! #lesothopromise#sunsets#rainstorm#instaphotos#instatravel#travel#sunset#southafrica
