A mate of mine, @justin.bourn , recently gave me a book called Principles by Ray Dalio.
It is a truly amazing book, written by one of the worlds true entrepreneurs, an amazing investor, hedge fund manager, and philanthropist.
In his book Ray rasies the point that nature can teach us alot. He mentions how sad it is to see a beautiful gazelle get eaten by a pack of vicious hyenas. But he goes on to state how this is just a natural fact of life – part of the balanced ecosystem that has evolved over time.
If you were to deny this reality and try to intervene, it could have dangerous repercussions.
So remember that things will go wrong sometimes. Also keep in mind that failure often provides a valuable chance to learn, adapt and evolve.
Everyone whose been around for a long time has had to adapt to change and bounce back from hard times or challenging situations, which is what you’ll eventually have to do, too.
Take the hard times in stride, and always keep learning and improving.
What is one thing we can do today to love ourselves better?. .
. "Regularly use pain as your guide toward quality reflection. Mental pain often comes from being too attached to an idea when a person or event comes along to challenge it...first calm yourself down...note your feelings as they arise in you...make being open-minded a habit...if you consistently use feelings of anger/frustration as cues to calm down, slow down, and approach the subject at hand thoughtfully, over time you'll experience negative emotions much less frequently...get to know your blind spots...take some time to record the circumstances in which you've consistently made bad decisions because you failed to see what others saw...if a number of believable people say you are doing something wrong and you are the only one who doesn't see it that way, assume that you are probably biased...MEDITATE...be evidence-based and encourage others to be the same...do everything in your power to help others also be open-minded...use evidence based decision making tools...know when it's best to stop fighting and have faith in your decision making process...".
Reflect without judging yourself. Sometimes it feels impossible to give myself permission to not know everything, to make mistakes, to fail when daring greatly. Then I remember I’m in the arena, down on the sand, sweat in my eyes, giving my all to make a difference, to take a stand for something worthwhile.

I mean, not in my immediate community, because they want the kids to #obey and not #questionauthority . But for those of you taking a stand tomorrow, rock on. And if you want to sit in because of your own #principles , good. But don't let others define those for you. #marchforourlives

60/40 is faded. Been faded, actually. What's sixty forty, you ask? 60% of your investment portfolio in stocks and the other two-fifths in bonds. Your fin advisor may argue that by doing so you've managed to be "diversified" and shielded from downturns in the markets but that's garbage. Old garbage at that.
Listen: diversification does help smooth out the rough areas, but only if you're actually diversified. Buying mutual funds with different types of stocks and bonds really isn't diversification at all. And to be honest, under enough stress, almost all stocks perform the same. Why? Because of systematic risk. All markets experience systematic risks at some point. But a diversified portfolio is least likely to be shocked by a single, damaging risk all at once. It's the whole "don't put all your eggs in the same basket" thing.
If you want to be diverse, be in different markets. Keep your core investments in what you know, but remember your knowledge is limited... Risk, however, isn't. By smartly allocating capital to diverse markets like commodities, currencies, real estate, other alternatives you spread the wealth and give yourself a better shot at upside over the long run. And if this sounds new to you, you're probably not talking to the right people. 😉
I saw that to do exceptionally well you have to push your limits and that, if you push your limits, you will crash and it will hurt a lot. You will think you have failed—but that won’t be true unless you give up. 💯

"Before I begin telling you what I think, I want to establish that I'm a dumb shit who doesn't know much relative to what I need to know" -- Ray Dalio .
if one of the most successful people on Earth is so humble as to say he doesn't know much, who are we to assert - or feign - intellectual superiority? Be humble. Stay open-minded. Stay curious.
Having read just a few chapters on his life principles and a few on work principles, I have a hunch that this will be yet another one of my favorite books already 😊. Will prolly come back with more posts on his awesome quotes! A must-read for everyone :)
