The judges have spoken and the first ever Niseko Shootout winner is...... @motonose166 with this Hirafu night skiing shot! In the words of the photographer, “This picture shows night at the Super Course. This day was the deepest powder. The lift takes us to the best place every time. It felt like a time machine.” Perfect, thanks @motonose166. Our judges each selected a shortlist of photos from over 1,300 images. This was one of the only shots consistent among all the judges’ picks and universally agreed upon as worthy of the 17’/18’ Shootout winner. Our judges applauded the great timing and bang on composition. Considering the incredible season Niseko has seen, this shot seemed to fittingly sum it up. As far as “uniquely Niseko moments” go, sitting on the Center Quad at night while it’s absolutely dumping certainly ranks up there. Just as any visitor to Niseko will know the feeling of being impelled to pull out their camera to capture that special moment (@motonose166 used an iPhone 7). The judges selected 3 honorable mentions swiping right respectively. @juanaizpuruphotomountain with amazing texture, light and composition. @vivividedede with a slash we can almost hear through the screen. And @seaandsummitphoto with a fast moving, dynamic, frame filling shot.
It truly was and is an amazing season so thanks to all lucky enough to experience it and for taking the time to help document it in the hashtag #nisekoshootout . We hope this is the start of something special and we’ve enjoyed every moment 📸 We can’t thank enough our official sponsors and panel of judges... here’s to many more years 😊
Learning from the #legend : Jerry Hance, who has been skiing the Chugach for 26 years. One of the biggest aspects to heli skiing is staying calm #astherotorturns , which is exemplified here at #blackopsvaldez everyday.
I spotted this shot at the top of a ridge but what I did not know was the new snow had just covered all the lava rock. Chris made the turn just as requested and punched some deep core shots into the bottom of his skis. Thanks and sorry to Chris for his ski sacrifice to the photo gods.
