If you’re a mom - these types of Pinterest posts can be very appealing. 🤩 And even though I have issues with terms like “baby belly pooch” 🤬 these workouts may not be inherently bad. BUT ⚠️ how can one workout be Ok for every mom out there? What if mamas belly doming or tenting? What if there is pain? What if she leaks? ⁉️ There are so many variables that go into postnatal training, especially when it involves the core. ✅ diastasis assessments ✅ pelvic floor assessments ✅ learning how to manage pressure in your abdomen - it’s not as simple as throwing together a bunch of exercises and preying off moms insecurities about their bodies. 🙅‍♀️ Send me a message!! The FEELING of being torn & incapable of moving are real and have resurfaced. However, separating the feeling and understanding that it comes from 10 years ago, NOT from today, has been a big realization in my recovery. Healing those feelings and parts of me that felt so torn 10 years ago has brought play & game back. 
Add something to your program that you think you absolutely would not be able to accomplish. Why not try and see what happens, right? You may surprise yourself and oh does it ever feel good in your body. It’s like your body is smiling from the inside out 😊 #movingthroughthecoreofme

Squatting last week Vs this week. I was squatting 70kg but not very deep. My middle back always kicks in immediately. I’ve always been weak there. Well since having babies. So this week I dropped weight to 50k and tried to go lower. Back was okay with it and fuck me my legs and arse are sore today! So...Whenever I’m in a gym it seems I will always hear a PT or class instructor say “pull in your core” to their eager participants. But what does that actually mean? 
I find a lot of people respond to this instruction by sucking in their belly button and contracting their abs like they are doing a crunch. This mostly results in holding your breath and, as the picture above demonstrates, places a lot of downward pressure on the pelvic floor. Doing this repeatedly and/or under great force can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction like that discussed in my previous post. 
Ideally we would ‘zip up’ our pelvic and lower abdominal muscles to provide stability for our pelvis and lower back. This shouldn’t affect breathing during movement. We can also include diaphragm breathing techniques for further stability through movement. 
I always suggest practicing ‘zipping up’ and breathing at the start of any training session or class to ensure the core and pelvis will be safe throughout.

This is a question we are often asked and with so much conflicting information available online it is no wonder many of us feel unsure of the do’s and don’ts surrounding exercise during pregnancy. The Australian Physical Activity guidelines does suggest pregnant women need to be exercising at a moderate intensity most days - 150 minutes per week to be exact! This can seem like a big ask, but it is achievable. With the right tools and knowledge, you can exercise effectively and most importantly safely during your pregnancy.

22 months postpartum and my body and mind have still not “bounced back”. Today @empowerfityeg said that “postpartum lasts forever” and this is so true (and so comforting). It doesn’t mean we are doomed to live with our postpartum injuries though, it just means that we need a different approach in how we care for our bodies and minds after having a child. I love that  @empowerfityeg has taken such a special approach to postpartum care and I can’t wait to dive in to this program!

BREATHE Postnatally I see a lot of women with stuck ribs.  They have not fully closed back down and do not move with the breathe, rotation or side bending.  How we hold our babies as we feed can sometimes lead to one side of the ribs standing out more than the other.  This exercise is great to reintroduce movement of the ribs with our breathing.  Try to feel if you have the same range of movement both sides.  In pregnancy our ribcage expands to accommodate our growing baby.  This can cause rib pain during pregnancy. Over the past year, I’ve learnt to re-address my fitness balance and try to make more time for ME 🙋🏽‍♀️
The gym is a happy place for a lot of us, but I like to remind myself that it’s not the only one. You might feel like nothing needs to change but a little evaluation every now and then won’t hurt 💖
Today, my body was craving a recovery day to get over the cold my 1 year old has kindly passed onto me. And so, a recovery day it shall be. I know my body will thank me for it in the long run and that’ll I have a much better and more productive session when I’m feeling back on form. 💖
I’ve also achieved better results by not ‘overtraining’ too and being more in tune with my body 🙅🏾‍♀️

So my pregnancy journey has finished and what a journey it was with ups and downs it was all worth it for my gorgeous baby girl. Today I planned to do one of my post natal HIIT sessions but Ezra was playing up and Myla very clingy, so quick change of plan and did a 5k walk with buggy and sling. My Pelvic Floor and Post Natal classes (bubs also welcome) are a really great way to recover from childbirth. It is essential to recover the body slowly. Start working from the inside out. Many people think that doing sit ups and jumping back into their Normal exercise routine is a great way to get their tummy and body back into shape. Actually this can often be the worst thing you can do, especially if you have Diastasis Recti (Separation of the abdominal wall). Deep core strength work, learning how to engage the transverse abdominal muscle, and pelvic floor muscles again is essential for recovery. This will prevent issues like incontinence in the long term. It is also not normal to leak or pee regularly after giving birth. This can be prevented. My advice - go back to basics. Eat wholefoods. So what does this mean?
🥑 Eat food that is in its original state.
🥑 Fill your fridge with fresh vegetables & fruit.
🥑 Find a local farmers market nearby selling organic produce- ie. no pesticides/herbicides/hormones.
🥑 Avoid processed & packaged foods.
🥑 Read labels- look for real food on the label with 5 ingredients or less. Avoid foods with additives & preservatives.
🥑 Ditch the white stuff- refined sugar. .
When you break it down, eating wholefoods is not rocket science. It involves you making good food choices on a regular basis so it becomes habit. And once it’s habit, it will no longer be a decision, you will just do it. And my goodness you will feel goooooood!

Apologies for the crotch shot 🙈 BUT this video demonstrates how I control the pressure in my abdomen while pressing some weight. 💪 For ME, inhale/relax and then exhale on exertion with a pelvic floor contraction works best to keep me engaged and minimize any downward pressure (towards the pelvic floor) and helps me keep my back from over arching (which I do a lot and it causes me pain). 🙌  Is this best for you? It very well might be! It works for most of my moms. But, will it hurt you if you reverse the breathing pattern? 🧐 Prob not, as long as we are making sure you’re symptom free and managing your pressure as best you can during the remainder of your day. 🤓 Got questions? Post natal recovery is a big deal! It takes time and patience and media so often celebrates those mothers who “bounce back” right after birth...often making the rest of us mere mortals feel like we are doing something wrong😢
The truth is...there is no bouncing. 
Post natal recovery is long nights, relentless demands, a floor covered in toys, nappies, burp cloths, and piles of washing waited to be folded. 
Its fitting in a shower, or a gym session, or a nap where you can to simply survive those early months. 
Best we build each other UP 🔝🔝🔝 by congratulating a mama for making it to the park with a drink bottle.

For now I am trying to be kind to myself. I am working on finding a schedule/routine that works around my new baby and teenager 😓to have some me time and workout.
