Wednesday's post on the Lotus 12 F2/F1 car was the first appearance of the wobbly web racing wheel, famously used on Lotus racers in the 1950s-1960s. In Colin Chapman's own words: In order to keep the weight down the web of the wheel should be as thin as possible, consistent with strength and for ease of manufacture, the foundry likes uniform thickness. In order to satisfy these two requirements and yet obtain the required variation in bending strength throughout the wheel the solution is to use the wobbly web principle. With this the peripheral distance at various radii from the hub is kept approximately constant which results in quite deep folds near the hub where great strength is required. These fade out to quite shallow waves at the rim where loads are less. Another advantage of this continuous web is that the fatigue life of the wheel is greatly enhanced by the absence of holes cast between the spokes, which inevitably have rough edges and may provide starting points for fatigue cracks.
The design is like a brilliant origami project. If the wheel's web were smoothed out it would become a nearly cylindrical cone of uniform wall thickness, folded into a convoluted disc which concentrates material and strength near the hub where forces are highest—like how a shovel handle needs to be thickest at its base. And this creates a uniform material thickness, which is easier to cast without voids or flaws.
This is beautiful work—the magnesium castings are a mere 7 lbs/3.2 kg apiece, which makes a tremendous difference in unsprung weight for a car with an all-up heft of just 620 lbs/281 kg.
The front wheel hubs are also integral to the wheel, further shaving weight, with wide-spaced bearings for more strength and rigidity in camber and toe.
It's little details like these that add up to greatness. A good lesson learned, one that can be applies almost everywhere. And should be. 😎
