When children play with simple open-ended natural materials their imaginations run wild and a stick can become many things. In contrast overly formed toys limit a child's imagination and therefore reduce the quality of a child's play.
I talk about the 'quality' of a child's play as this is significant when we understand that children form themselves and make sense of the world through their play. Wholesome play that is child initiated and child-led, using open ended play materials is curative and therapeutic.
Be encouraged to conduct a toy audit of your child, students or grandchildren's toys. Look to keeping the simple toys that lend themselves to being many different things, objects from nature or made of wood are sensorially beautiful to play with, single use toys or toys that do not foster your families values can be disposed of. Be encouraged not to compromise on what you offer the child during these formative years, for the things they play with are their 'soul-food'. Image repost from
#marchmeetthemaker2018 Day 16: HELPER - this is our main little helper who loves to think he’s painting all the toys single handedly 😉. One of his most favourite jobs is wrapping the wooden animals... stickers, tissue paper and boxes....heaven!!!! 😆 we’ve also had so much support from all our family in recent months and in particular help from my Dad who does all the printing work and all my siblings who have helped or are booked to help in the near future with everything from advice and support with social media, help with photos through to posting and packaging. Hand in hand is Day 7’s prompt: ROUTINE- (still catching up - nearly there!) for which we haven’t got much of one at the moment. Between juggling normal jobs, a toddler and a new business we haven’t quite settled into a routine yet. There are a lot of late nights and early starts!
#marchmeetthemaker Day 15: BOOMERANG - Being fairly new to the world of instagram this is our first boomerang attempt and it’s so fun I think we’ll be doing many more! It seemed a good opportunity to do a little Easter post with it only a couple of weeks away - our little chick is getting very excited!!🐣 Still playing catch up so Day 6: WORKSPACE- Martin’s is in the workshop as pictured a few times recently and mine is our lovely dining room table (!) as pictured in many of our posts, until we turn the spare room into a studio ☺️
