Red Sparrow (2018)
Director: Francis Lawrence
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Jeremy Irons.
0.25 out of 10. If your idea of a good time at the movies is to see Jennifer Lawrence register one stone-faced expression as a Russian spy with a fluctuating accent then this very poor entry to the espionage genre is for you. This slow, boring, overlong and suspenseless spy thriller is about a ballerina (Lawrence) who is recruited as an intelligence officer after suffering a career-ending injury. She is sent to a spy academy supervised by an asexual matron (Rampling) and learns how to use her body and sexuality as weapons. Upon graduating, she is given the mission to seduce a CIA operative (Edgerton) and find out the identity of a mole within the Russian intelligence community. Interesting premise is failed by listless direction, weak script and laughable miscastings. Whatever the talented Irons and Rampling are doing in this tripe can only be explained by a fat paycheck. Schoenaerts marred his almost immaculate resume by participating in this movie while Edgerton is unconvincing as a CIA agent. Lawrence gets to change her hair color by dyeing her hair in the bathroom and like Elle Woods would say, "Any Cosmo girl would know that no one can dye their hair to full blonde in the sink." For a movie that claims to celebrate the empowerment of women, it actually degrades the female sex with violence and abuse. Even Lawrence's much-ballyhooed full nudity cannot inject any life into this turkey. Lawrence is also not believable as a ballerina and a spy. The quarter of a point is for the European film locations. The best part of the movie is the end credits.
The Open House (2018)
Directors: Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote
Starring: Dylan Minnette, Piercey Dalton
1.5 out of 10. Another utter waste of time from the Netflix assembly line about a mother and son, who after the death of the patriarch, live in a relative's vacation home and start encountering strange and creepy stuff. It takes over two-thirds of the movie before something suspenseful happens and it isn't even heart-stopping. Two directors collaborated to helm a thriller without the thrills and tell a story that is vague as a murky river. Populated with textbook suspense-thriller characters from a weird nosy neighbor to the friendly man who flirts with the mother. Minnette is a charismatic actor and he made watching this sufferable but he deserves better than this baloney. #theopenhouse#netflix#suspenselessthriller#dylanminnette#nothrills#moviereview#movierecap#movienotes#jokeofamovie#wasteoftime
The best people always are.
No need for designer, no desire to be dripping in diamonds, just want you or to be themselves and that demands any real-mans respect. Whether an Audi or a Merc or simply an Astra. It should not matter. #bestpeople#holdontothem#nothrills#nofrills
