My grandmother died when I was about 8. I was in the second grade, and it was my first real experience with losing someone I loved. I was still very young, and in a lot of ways, I only had a few years of memories with her because it’s hard to remember things from when you’re 4 and 5 years old. And my grandfather married the most amazing woman not terribly long after, and so I was incredibly lucky to get to have two grandmothers. I am still so lucky to have her to this day.
But I still think about my Nana Jimmie all the time, and even after all these years, I miss her terribly. A few weeks ago, I had a random memory about her. She kept a round container of powdered perfume, Estee Lauder Private Collection, on her dresser. I used to open it up and smell it, because it smelled like her. I found myself wishing that I could just smell it again – that I could just smell her again. That smell is one of the few tangible things that I remember about her.
I asked my mom if she knew where I could get some, because I honestly thought they couldn’t possibly still make it anymore, but come to find out, they do. I stopped at the mall yesterday, and the lady at the Estee Lauder counter sprayed some on a tile, and when I told her why I wanted it, she said, “we get that a lot.” I put the square in my pocket, and all night, I smelled the comforting and familiar smell of my grandmother that I hadn’t smelled in so very long.
It was like she was right there with me, but I so miss her still. I wish I could have coffee with her, and show her my artwork, and give her a hug. I know she’s with me, but I still miss her terribly.
Even though I know she is always with me, it sure was beautiful to get to experience that connection through something tangible like scent.
Nike Air Jordan 3 “1988 Slam Dunk Contest ‘88”. The story on this shoe is so dope. Quality is A1 on this shoe. Tumbled leather draped all over it. @frankcooker you guys got something transcendent going on over there @nike @jumpman23 . Keep it coming bro! Stories and concepts are getting doper and doper as time passes.
When rivals inspire each other to become better! :-) We would always compete with each other for the top spot during our elementary years. Back in the 80s, in National University, there would only be two students who would vie for 1st honor and 2nd honor. 🥇🥈He was good at math and science, I would excell in history and social studies and language. 👱🏻♀️👨🏼I was an orator he was great at solving math problems. 👩🏻🔬👨🏼💼We were never friends nor enemies but he was one of the reasons why I excelled in class and became very competitive. ;-) Thank you Peter Glen Reyes for last night! Ang saya balikan nung mga panahon na nene at totoy pa tayo! 👫I remember, nag-aabang lagi iyong mga classmates natin sino ang magiging number 1 every year! Parang may “team Peter” 🚶🏼♂️and “team Margie”! 🏃🏼♀️Hahahahhha! Peter is now a certified New Yorker! He is a Clinical Instructor, a registered nurse and a PT and worked his way up to become successful!👨🏼💼 And after more than 28years of not seeing each other, we did a game last night trying to determine who brought home the medals during our elementary years! And here’s what we have: (Honor standing:)
Grade 1: Cabanayan (1st) Reyes (2nd)
Grade 2: Reyes (1st) Cabanayan (2nd)
Grade 3: Cabanayan (1st) Reyes (2nd)
Grade 4: Cabanayan (1st) Reyes (2nd)
Grade 5: Deveza (1st) Cabanayan (2nd)
Grade 6: Deveza (Valedictorian) Reyes (Salutatorian) Romero (1st honorable mention) Marinay (2nd honorable mention) Cabanayan (3rd honorable mention) *did I remember it right Peter Glen Reyes?
