This is the mask of a 👹 made by my son 👦🏻
February 3rd is the day of Setsubun👹
Setsubun refers to the day before the beginning of each season
(the first days of spring, summer, fall and winter).
It is believed that 👹 come when the seasons change in Japan.
There are many rituals to exorcise these 👹 The rituals differ in each region.
We throw the beans at a person pretending to be a demon saying “ONI👹 WA SOTO! FUKU WA UCHI!”
ONI👹 means demon and FUKU means good luck(or fortune).
“ONI👹 WA SOTO, FUKU WA UCHI” means “Demon out! Good luck in!”.
We get rid of the bad luck out of our house and bring the good luck in by doing this.
Other than MAMEMAKI, we eat the same number of roasted beans as our age or eat EHO-MAKI which is a sushi specially made for this occasion.
This is one of the biggest events of the year and is held all over Japan.
