Throwin’ back to the moment I qualified for state for the first time. 5 years later it’s already the eve of my last collegiate regionals and I’m still chasing that thrill of qualifying. #lovethebattle#yearofthedawg
One year ago I tore my ACL and meniscus, ending my junior season. This year, I’m fighting harder than ever to be able to be back out there on the competition floor for my last year of the sport. #lovethebattle

It started in 7th grade Language Arts class. The worst class of my entire existence. I was never really great at English(Spanish was easier and still is), or writing and so my grade in this class rapidly became a very low D. 😳My teacher then decided to call my mom in for a one on one meeting with her and then to follow with me. I was so scared my mom was going to be angry at me, disappointed in me, but instead she asked me one very important question. “Are you putting in all your effort day in and day out?” I stared at my mom and said I don’t think I am, Mom. 😰I was so confused but she left it that. She left it at effort. No more explanation. Nothing. I decided to try and put all my effort into this class. I wanted to make my mom proud, but I also wanted to see what effort would do. Two months after my meeting, I was up to an A. From that very point on I went on to get all A’s for the rest of my career in middle and high school. Not because I was the smartest kid, because I wasn’t, but because I chose to put effort day in and day out everyday and in every class. -
I always refer back to that very day when my mom asked me that simple, yet unending question, “are you putting in all your effort day in and day out? This taught me the growth mindset. The growth mindset always focuses on effort rather than intelligence or talent. This is the mindset that will change how kids today think. How they work. What talent they have or how smart they never outweighs effort. What you put in day in and day out weighs more in the long run than intelligence and talent will ever do. My mom had a very sneaky way of teaching me effort and what hard work does! This is another reason she’s my hero. She has always loved and pushed me in the healthiest way to be the best version of myself. I’m telling you people, effort is what reaps success. -
