Album #1 : Townes Van Zandt - Live at The Old Quarter, Houston, Texas (Tomato Records, 1977) - Vinyl
I grew up with Townes playing ‘round the house, in mixtapes blaring in my dad’s old Jeep Cherokee, and in covers by guys like Townes’ confidante and one of my songwriting faves, Guy Clark. It wasn’t ‘til dad got me a CD copy of this record Christmas 2010 though when I got the Van Zandt fever.
Live at the Old Quarter is undoubtedly the best way to get into Townes’ ouevre: a two LP collection of some of the best songs ever to be put to tape, littered with hilarious banter and talking blues ditties, delivered in front of a quiet and kind audience receptive to Townes’ gentle delivery.
I used to play the double-disc CD all the time in my old Chevy Lumina, falling in love with gems like “Two Girls” and “No Place to Fall” while speeding down Parr Line in Huron County. When my dad passed, we put “To Live is to Fly”, one of my dad’s favourite songs, on his stone, just like Townes has on his own. This cool original Tomato Records pressing is one of my most cherished possessions, both as a piece of music and as a testament of the friendship my dad and I established over our love of classic country and folk music.
Fave Songs: “To Live is to Fly”, “Pancho and Lefty”, “If I Needed You”, “Fraternity Blues”, “Tecumseh Valley” (playing in frame 4)
The live audio recording of our first EP “All Four Waves” will be released this Sunday, available exclusively on Oldernar.bandcamp.com.
We put plenty of effort into making sure this came out just as we wanted & were really pleased with the progression on all songs from the original EP as a result of the addition of new parts from not so new member Dan, and the passage of time allowing the tracks to sink into our subconscious and take on new meanings. We hope you all enjoy & thanks so much for all of your awesome comments on the live videos. We love doing this just for the sake of making music, but they’re such a sweet cherry on the cake from all of the friends from across the world in this small music community. Thanks, Oldernar.
