This Medieval Throwback Thursday features the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The late 14th century ring might have belonged to Karibut, the Duke of Severy-Nóvgorod. During the Lithuanian Civil War (1381-84 CE) he aided his brother Jogaila in his fight to maintain his title as Grand Duke of Lithuania against his uncle Kęstutis and cousin Vytautas. He began a rebellion in 1382 that engaged Kęstutis’s troops, allowing Jogaila to capture Vilnius, the capital of the Grand Duchy. Vytautas, with the aid of the Teutonic Knights (who as Catholics had a history of crusading in mostly-pagan Lithuania) unsuccessfully besieged Vilnius in 1390, during the Lithuanian Civil War (1389-92). Remarkably Henry of Bolingbroke, future King Henry IV of England, aided the Knights with 70-80 of his household knights. He returned in 1392, this time with over 100 men, but once again his crusading attempts proved fruitless. The war (and Vytautas’ alliance with the Teutonic Knights) ended in 1392 when Vytautas became Grand Duke and Jogaila Superior Duke. #medievalthrowback#lithuanianhistory#englishhistory
Gediminas The Grand Duke of Lithuania. The most polite conqueror. He is credited with expanding Lithuania’s territory which, at the time of his death, spanned the area ranging from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. But Gediminas always paid respect to traditions and cultural identities of conquered lands. Monument to Gediminas is kinda leaning above the city with its sword and there is a legend that if a virgin walks under its sword it will rise up a little bit 😏

🇱🇹 Haçlar Tepesi, Litvanya'nın kuzeyinde bulunan Šiauliai şehrinin 12 km kuzeyinde küçük bir tepe. Tepeye haç bırakma geleneğinin, 1831 ayaklanmasında ölenlerin akrabaları tarafından başlatıldığına inanılıyor. Tepeye haç bırakma, Sovyetler döneminde yasaklanmış ve haçların hemen hepsi yerlerinden sökülmüş ve tahta haçlar yakılmış. Yasaklamalara rağmen halk geceleri tepeye gidip, haç dikmeye devam etmişler. Tepedeki haçların şimdiki sayısının yaklaşık 100.000 olduğu düşünülüyor - Seda - -
🇱🇹 The Hill of Crosses is a site about 12 km north of the city of Šiauliai, in northern Lithuania. It is believed that the first crosses were left on the Hill by the relatives of rebels killed in the uprising of 1831. Although the crosses were banned and therefore burned and crushed in Soviet times, people kept coming at night and brought new crosses. The number of the crosses is believed to be around 100,000 today.
