It was mind blowing to visit Kalaupapa, a settlement on Moloka’i island’s north shore. Beginning in 1865, any person in Hawaii who was suspected to have leprosy was arrested and sent to the isolated Kalaupapa peninsula. Early beliefs about leprosy caused sufferers to be shunned by society and forced to live in isolation. Families were torn apart and sick members were disowned. Although a cure for leprosy was found in 1941, it wasn’t until 1969 when Hawaii’s isolation policy was finally abolished. There are currently 7 people left on Kalaupapa who choose to stay there. We now know that leprosy (aka Hansen’s Disease) is caused by a bacteria transmitted through direct person to person contact and it affects the eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and nerves causing discoloration or lumps on the skin and in severe cases, deformities. A disease that once caused rejection and expulsion from our society is now rare and easily treatable once recognized, but it can take up to 20 years for symptoms to appear. An ongoing effort is underway to educate people around the world to end discrimination against people living with Hansen’s Disease. You can visit Kalaupapa by hiking or riding a mule down a 1700’ steep trail followed by a guided tour through the settlement before ascending on the trail. If you get the chance to go, it’s definitely worth it to see a place that is unlike anywhere else in the world! #kalaupapa#molokai#bucketlist#hawaiilife#hawaii#leprosy#educateyourself#hawaii#islandhopping#travelpt
Done slit-skin smear (SSS) for my Leprosy patient..such an opportunity to work here to see leprosy cases..but the more interesting part where i have to use the heat produced from laminate machine in order to pre-heat the specimens..hard to find smokers with lighter nowadays...and sometimes need to be creative tho~ 🤣😂😎

(Non-Requested Review) The 3rd Death album reviewed. Wow. At this point, I'm just saying the same thing, but... What else can I say that HASN'T been said already? Anyways, I gave this album like, 13 run throughs. Needless to say, it's damn great. It's the last album before Death changed their lyrical themes and their music style in general. Although, for the old-school death stuff, it's fucking awesome! I mean you have the title track, Born Dead, Forgetten Past, Left To Die, Pull The Plug, Open Casket, Primitive Ways, Choke On It- wait a second, this is the second time I've listed every song off the album. Like I said with Symbolic, the songs here are MUST LISTENS. I mean, it's not like Symbolic in terms of the music/lyrics, like, AT ALL, but for what it is, it's a masterpiece. Really, what do I prefer, more stuff like Symbolic, or this? Hmm... why not both? I mean, a MIX of this and Symbolic would be hard to touch honestly. Besides, I mean, the drums on this sound like THUNDER, like holy shit man, it's most shown on stuff like Open Casket. I mean, the general songwriting and pretty much everything is great on here, pretty much no issues. I'll admit tho, when I first heard Chuck do the screams in Left To Die, I laughed too hard. Sorry to y'all, but I thought it was pretty goddamn funny. Anyways, yet again, Death is out here with the goods, 😁🔥🔥🔥🔥👍. Overall: 10/10. (ANOTHER 10? Again, why do you think? Death is simply THAT good.) #death#chuckschuldiner#rickross#deathmetal#leprosy#1988#metal
Today I am running a molecular diagnostic test for leprosy. I’m working with samples of patients with suspicious lesions. In this test we use primers that specifically detect DNA from M. leprae (the causing agent) in the lesions. In two hours the results will be in. Patients with a positive result will immediately start a prescribed treatment that effectively kills the pathogen and cures the desease! 🙂
Love the story behind these block print bags. The artisans are all autistic, so each has their unique style. Some very regimented, where others happily overlap!! We met MESH (maximising employment to serve the handicapped) for the first time this year. Great Fair Trade organisation in Delhi. Really enjoyed our visit.
