Breaking News: Long Beach is made up of 9 districts. "Cambodia Town" is divided up by 4 of those districts. Last night, Sunday, March 18th, the Cambodian community with Congress member Alan Lowenthal and other city officials signed the 'Equitable Redistricting of Cambodian Community' demanding that Cambodia Town and the surrounding community be made part of one Council District in time for the 2020 Election.

Day 435 - Rouge sang
Cambodia went through 4 years of horror (1975-1979) under the Pol Pot / Khmer Rouge regime: a communist dictatorship obsessed with self sufficiency, leading them to empty cities and forcing the whole population to work in the farms. To slave them actually. And to mass kill their supposed "opponents". They are responsible of the genocide of their own population & minorities. 1 out of 5 Cambodians died during their 4 years of "reign". Vietnamese troops invaded Cambodia & chased the Khmer Rouge out the country (which became a guerilla fighting against the communist Vietnamese and their emissaries (supported by the USSR).
In the context of the Cold War, until the monarchy was restored (in 1993) their political party (Democratic Kampuchea) would still be recognized as the representative of Cambodia by the UN (and lots of western countries & their capitalist allies). Today you can visit one of the 196 Khmer Rouge prisons: S-21 or Tuol Sleng genocide Museum. From a former high school it became one of the most terrifying place where between 12,000 to 20,000 people died. A place of ignominious torture. There were a handful of survivors. The visit is essential to anyone traveling to Cambodia. It contrasts with the Cambodian’s peaceful and laidback attitude we felt. And their ability to smile again, keep living and try to bounce back.
