You all know that I hate traditional cardio, right? I really do. I can think of nothing worse than spending time on a treadmill, or stairmill, or elliptical. I just…...can’t. But cardio has tons of benefits that I don’t want to miss out on, so I have do something, right? Enter my new favorite quick, efficient cardio exercise - jumping rope. Until a couple of months ago, I’m pretty sure elementary school was the last time I had even held a jump rope. But it turns out, I love it!
My current routine is 10 minutes of jump rope intervals after my regular strength workout. I jump for 20 seconds, rest for 40 seconds, and repeat. My goal is to work up to a 30:30 work:rest ratio, but - trust me - jumping rope is definitely something you need to ease into!
The first time I decided to jump, I went straight to a 30:30 interval and I pulled a muscle in my calf. Oops! Once it had recovered, I tried again, but this time I started off very slowly. If you are interested in starting to jump rope, here’s a system for easing into it that worked very well for me. You’ll jump every minute on the minute (EMOM) for 12 minutes. The first minute, you’ll just jump 10 times. Rest the remainder of the minute. The second minute, jump 20 times. Rest the remainder of the minute. The third minute, jump 30 times. Rest the remainder of the minute. Repeat that cycle 4 times. This might not feel like particularly difficult cardio, but pay attention to how the muscles in your calves and feet feel. Once you can get through this workout without pain or cramping in those muscles, start adding time to each set. Try making your jumps 15, 25, and 35. Once you can do that with no problems, move on to a timed interval. I recommend starting with a 20:40 work:rest ratio for 10 minutes (what I’m currently doing). As this starts to feel easy, and your muscles become accustomed to it, start to add time again. My next step is 25:35, and then 30:30. You will definitely be out of breath and sweaty by the time you’re done!
Give it a shot and let me know how you do! Tag someone you know who hates traditional cardio & could use a new idea!👇👇👇
