The Burbs. Every since I was little I've been wrapping myself up in this movie anytime I needed cheering up. It is one of the most charming, comfortable, well written, well acted movies of all time. At one point during this movie Tom Hanks yells something along the lines of "look at us, breaking in to houses, spying on our neighbors, we are the freaks not them! It's been my view point on the entire world. For those people who walk in to stores and get stared down, or chased in to a parking lot by religious weirdos asking if you worship Satan. You're normal, they're the freaks. I got this movie last night and was pretty excited about it the day before. When it got here I was dealing with full blown irritable depression. About once every few weeks I get easily agitated and sad. Why? Good kids, good wife? It's the brain man, sucks. If you're feeling like this I want you to know that you can really kick yourself about the things you do when you're like this, but honestly you have no control. If you did it wouldn't be that way. I'm not sure if it works for anyone else, but I know for me it helps to go to a room shut the door and just put on a movie that makes you feel the way The Burbs makes me feel. Try not to take it out on the people around you. Life is short even when living to your fullest potential, don't you dare spend one moment bringing someone else down with you. Everyone has their own troubles they don't need yours too. I hope I can start practicing what I preach. My second favorite performance in this movie is from Rick Ducommun. He was in Little Monsters, Blank Check, Die Hard, Encino Man, Ghost in the Machine, and once a pro skateboarder. He died a few years back from complications due to diabetes. No big Facebook post, no mourning. I didn't even know he died. Love the movies that make you feel warm. It can be better than medicine and sweeter than a hug. #theburbs#tomhanks#bluray#movies#screamfactory#shoutfactory#coreyfeldman#rickDucommun#klopeks#depression#carriefisher

"Remember what you were saying about people in the 'burbs, Art, people like Skip, people who mow their lawn for the 800th time, and then SNAP? WELL, THAT'S US. IT'S NOT THEM, THAT'S US. WE'RE the ones who are vaulting over the fences, and peeking in through people's windows. We're the ones who are THROWING GARBAGE IN THE STREET, AND LIGHTING FIRES. WE'RE THE ONES WHO ARE ACTING SUSPICIOUS AND PARANOID, ART. WE'RE THE LUNATICS. US. IT'S NOT THEM. It's us." #theburbs#tomhanks#carriefisher#joedante
Although hardly based in reality, THE 'BURBS remains one of the best and funniest comedies about life in suburbia, perhaps because it builds on the basic paranoia and irritants of neighbours, but with a light touch, and reaching a peak of ridiculousness instead of cruelty. Violence is implied instead of graphically rendered, and the villains aren't smiling everyday folks but eccentric Europeans who ferry their trash from the garage to the curb by sedan, and serve drippy sardines on pretzels to guests.
It's also a comedy that's grown in reputation and delight over the decades since Joe Dante directed Dana Olsen's sharp script in 1989, and it took far too long for a proper special edition to be released in North America. Dante must be delighted that his post-GREMLINS work is getting some love by Shout Select, who also showcased his 1993 nostalgia piece MATINEE.
Set around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, MATINEE has John Goodman playing a William Castle impresario of cheezy horror films with gimmicky devices. When his latest epic MANT makes its small town debut, the kids are in for shocks and a live monster. It's a light tale told with heart, and features one of Goodman's best performances.
Both films are also blessed with tongue-in-cheek Jerry Goldsmith scores, with BURBS featuring synth dog yapping and PATTON-esque trumpet fanfare for the 'hood's paranoid libertarian (Bruce Dern) who helps plant the fear that the Klopeks have murdered Walter, his dog, and are using their furnace to dispose of tricky neighbour goo.
If you've never seen either them, rent them, and if you're a Dante fan or fan of this perfect pair, buy them in long-awaited Blu-ray editions for the home library. And if you find a femur in your back yard, don't panic... Yet....--- MH1
