Taco Palenque (chain restaurant)
The order: refried beans and Mexican rice on flour tortillas & water
The taco story: WARNING! The taco fillings are NOT vegan. After asking the cashier about the beans and rice, I found neither to be vegan; but, I did know that each taco comes with an extra tortilla. By happenstance I had a friend along for lunch and a devious plan was conceived. I (plant baser) will use the extra tortilla and fill it with items from the expansive salsa bar. Friend said he was happy to have a cheap ass date... (even though I paid... what a jerk, right?). So I gathered all my ingredients for my tacos from the bar and got some chips for snacks. Surprisingly the cabbage slaw, avocado salsa & jalapeño tacos were pretty tasty. I didn’t mind the cold fillings. I do think guac would have been a welcome addition to the taco party. The cheapskate friend ate his two tacos and I devoured mine. We toasted our achievement in vegan hackism and went about our business.
Cost: about $3 + tax
Recommendation: Conditional - this is more of a vegan life hack than a true review
It's a "popper" in a bite size Filo cup. Seasoned cream cheese, a jalapeno slice (seasoned and cooked in bacon fat) topped with bacon, a small drizzle of honey, and some course salt on top. Warmed in the oven before devouring. :)
