This playlist I made on Spotify commemorating the record label Zoth Ommog is in heavy rotation right now. Link in bio! Zoth Ommog is an EBM (electronic body music) label that was most active from 1989 and 1999, started by @real_talla_2xlc. I grew up on it. Of all the labels in or near this genre that I adored (Metropolis, Wax Trax!, Ant-Zen, Mute, etc.), Zoth is the one that remains the most resonant. It's hard to really put the Zoth sound into words. It always felt rusted, hollow, textured, organic, aggressive, tormented... but also incredibly campy and ridiculously danceable. One of my favorite bands - the vastly underrated Texas-based group Mentallo and the Fixer - had its home on Zoth Ommog, and it's this band, more than any other, that truly emits Zoth's aural aesthetic for me. So I've put together this playlist to capture what I love about Zoth, complete with many deep cuts and a few crowd-pleasers. It's hard to pick favorites, but I'll also cite In Strict Confidence (shout-out to my girl @ninadelianin!) and Decoded Feedback for being a really big deal for me during my beautiful misspent youth. The playlist has a few controversial ommissions (I was just never that crazy about Armageddon Dildos), and one or two songs that weren't *technically* released by Zoth, but still represent the sound and acts associated with the label. If anyone has favorites from that time, in this genre or adjacent ones, I'd love to hear 'em. Cover illustration for this playlist is "Blind Love" by my dear friend @paulkomoda. Thank you to all the Zoth artists for providing a soundtrack to some of the dumbest, most intense, most transformative times of my life. Enjoy y’all!
