Lachenalia mathewsii is endemic to South Africa and was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1983. Most of its natural habitat has been converted to agricultural or urban use, and its remaining two populations are not protected from development. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in South Africa has distributed Lachenalia mathewsii plants to botanic gardens to ensure the survival of this species.
