"I spend most of my childhood with my grandparents, so I have a very skewed view of Taiwan. I just spend all the time with old retired people, watching them smoke cigarettes, chew tobacco, drink tea and reminisce about what happens during the War.
My grandmother and I would go the market in the old part of town, the most dodgy parts of Taipei, where there're prostitutes on the streets, that's what I associate childhood with. I have this intimate understanding of the culture, and I feel safe there but out of a place of privilege because I didn't actually live there.
I get to leave"
