Long Valley field trip, day 1 part 1: Mt. Laurel, Mammoth Mtn. 1: Our first stop of the field trip was a gorgeous view of the “folded” mountain we’d glimpsed towering over Convict Lake Resort the night before. We drove just a minute or two to get a good view across Convict Lake. Mt. Laurel is composed of Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks above a batholith. To the right, a near-vertical complete section from Cambrian to Devonian! White Devonian sandstone crosses Convict Creek Canyon. The orange rock to the left is Silurian and along the saddle at left with the three snow patches is the Laurel-Convict fault. This undulatory thrust fault separates Upper Paleozoic from very faulted Mid to Late Paleozoic/Devonian rocks. The peak of Mt. Laurel has Ordovician on top of Devonian. Orange to the left of it is Silurian age and the dark summit is Ordovician on top of Devonian. The saddle with the three snow patches is the Laurel-Convict Fault, which separates upper Paleozoic from mid/late Paleozoic–Devonian. The vegetated slope to front right is part of an uninterrupted section of sediments from Cambrian to Devonian! The white Devonian sandstone crosses the canyon to the left and up the opposite side. View is looking west across Convict Lake. We can see this from the front door of our cabin. Needless to say, so far this field trip is amazing.

Hanging out on Mammoth Mountain today! The view of Mammoth Crest and Lakes Basin is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This winter the snow was up to the "Mammoth Mountain" sign; skiing just closed in late July.

Met zijn 3718 meter boven zeeniveau en 7000 meter boven de zeebodem is het de hoogste berg van Spanje. In hoogte vanaf de zeebodem is de Teide de derde vulkaan van de wereld, na de Mauna Kea en Mauna Loa op Hawaï. Deze vulkaan wordt als 'slapend' beschouwd. Nieuwe erupties worden verwacht, waaronder erupties met gevaarlijke pyroclastische stromen.

De Teide is een jonge vulkaan in de oude #caldera van Las Cañadas. 150.000 jaar geleden leidde een grote eruptie tot de vorming van een caldera in Las Cañadas met een afmeting van 16 km in de oost-westrichting en 9 km in de noord-zuidrichting. Sindsdien werden de stratovulkanen Teide - Pico Viejo in de noordelijke helft van de caldera gevormd, wat nog steeds voortduurt. Een caldera met een jonge vulkaan wordt een #Sommavulkaan genoemd.

De vulkaan en het omringende gebied meet 18900 hectare en wordt het Parque Nacional del Teide genoemd. De laatste uitbarsting in het park werd geregistreerd in 1909. Het park ligt gemiddeld op circa 2000 meter boven de zeespiegel. Vanwege de lage hoeveelheid neerslag en de sterk wisselende temperaturen is nauwelijks sprake geweest van bewoning. Sinds 2007 is dit gebied opgenomen in de werelderfgoedlijst van de #UNESCO

El Teide is een van de 16 Decade Volcanoes die zijn aangewezen door de #IAVCEI in verband met hun geschiedenis van grote uitbarstingen en de nabijgelegen bewoonde gebieden.

Het park is met de auto goed te bereiken. Door het park loopt de autoweg TF-21
