Tonight I'll be braving hot coals (and snow?!) by walking on fire to raise funds for St Barnabas House! 🔥❄️
After the similar conditions when I did the Nuts Challenge a couple of weeks ago (my shins have only just recovered by the way) I'm sure it's destined to be freezing cold for all of my challenges this year (hopefully not India!).
If you'd like to sponsor me I'll be very grateful: www.justgiving.com/sam-skilton-india-trek
Rest easy, Stormin’ Norman. Last night, Norman’s foster family said their final goodbyes to the most determined dog we’ve ever met. Norman came to City of Elderly Love last summer after being rescued from cruelty case by PA’s Humane Law Enforcement. He couldn’t use his back legs and scooted everywhere he needed to go. After months of physical therapy (which he loved), Norman regained a lot of the use in his legs. While never a picture of health, the last 8 months of Norman’s life while he was with the Chambers family was likely the best time of his life. Unfortunately, his broken body continued to fail him even though his spirit couldn’t be broken. Norman crossed the bridge yesterday surrounded by his foster family and our vet partner. 💔 #hospice#hospicecare#fospice#saveaseniorpet#shihtzu#seniordog#olddogsarethebestdogs#cityofelderlylove#coel#phillypets#phillydogs#dogsofphilly#phillypets#nokillphilly#phillynokill
Ruby update: we continue to be very #blessed & fortunate to get the best advice & guidance for our #Ruby . This girl has taught me more than I can share with you here, but know that she continues to fight the good fight💪 while it gets harder every day. #inthistogether ➡️ This girl is my hero & teaches me about transition every day.🧘🏻♀️💕 -going to study hospice under a wonderful vet so I can teach all of you what I’ve learned & help other #dogs .➡️. We are forever-students. ➡️ The good news is, with the ongoing support, love, caring vets, & my teachers, #Rosie & I can have a little more time with our beautiful & sweet girl. This first photo of Ruby was last year when she got her first set of hot pink wheels from @k9carts. Thank you to @twohandsfourpaws.🙏🏼. Photo: @buddhadog31. Ruby has done very well with these wheels; she continues #acupuncture & very light/gentle rehab @calanimalrehab so she doesn’t lose the use of her front legs. We love @sneakersthevetdog! Ruby maintains a healthy renal diet, @justfoodfordogs. The 2nd photo is from today; 7 months later.😔. Ruby has done the imaginable... she’s fought for 10 months. Let’s pray that she gets to celebrate her 15th birthday on May 20th.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 It’s looking good.👌 #DogaFit would never exist without my 2 #dogs , and it will thrive knowing their spirits are with me forever. We’ll never stop learning & teaching so we can help all the #pups . Thank you to those who are there for us #everysingleday ; we couldn’t do this without you. It is one of my deepest desires that I can make a positive impact on at least a few people in my lifetime. That things I do will actually matter. And not just on the surface, but truly truly matter for His kingdom. Sometimes I really struggle with purpose, direction, contentment and fear of failure. It always seems that God knows just when I need a vote of confidence and He reminds me why I do what I do. This is Tammy. When she joined my team a couple years ago, I wasn’t totally positive that she would stick with it, or be consistent or truly begin believing in herself. #realtalk For awhile she quit , then the-committed herself. Only this time, she went all in. She used Plexus as a tool, and months later she is off 13 prescriptions, never naps anymore, has lost 50+ lbs and is now the mother she always wanted to be. She used to be so plaqued with exhaustion and pain that she rarely left the bed. To see her on the stage last night sharing her testimony filled me with thankfulness. But there is always a domino effect. What people don’t know is that Tammy attended the funeral of a very special person just hours before this. A person that she cared deeply for and was their caregiver all the way up till they took their last breath. She was able to help provide comfort to a dying man bc she first took care of herself. His family thanked her profusely from the stage at his funeral. It was so very touching. The domino effect associated her commitment to health is so far reaching. It brought me to tears last night and I’m thankful that God allowed Tammy to trust me and that she ultimately changed her entire life. Because she began treating her body like the temple that it is, she was able to fully utilize her spiritual gift of caregiving, in order to greatly bless someone else. So Overwhelming thankful. #fibromyalgia#anxiety#guthealth#hospice#naturalhealth#caregiver#spiritualgift#qualityoflife
Swipe two- these are repost but very useful for decorating plastic eggs and using water colors ((homemade))- they are brilliant paints to use. You will love how they look on watercolor paper. Simply magnificent so composed with fluid and movement. Am at my job, this frightful weather has changed... An Ice storm headed this way! yikes! I have a 22 mile drive home after a 14 hour shift. Say a little prayer for me. Arlene is so confused tonight. We are sitting- together- side by side, am in a chair. She's in a recliner. Of course she wanted to get up, she's ready for bed yet is not willing to go. Arlene is not safe walking around nor with her walker. Am hoping these hospices nurses change her medication. Am prepared to sit her with her all night long. Her age is 76 so young to have Parkinson's 15 years-- in 5 1/2 months I had not seen my patients she was so much better. Now greatly declined. I have her ice water, snacks and soft music on. Thinking ---what I can do to help her be more comfortable. This recliner is a electronic lift chair with remote. I have pillows positioned under her legs, head, back, bottom. I am listening to her yet she's speaking of her mother and father. 50 years ago. Regression is very normal behavior. She looks content thank you God, has drank her soda, ice water, piece of pizza. She will eat anything you give her. I peeled an orange gave her a few piece. Her comfort level is better she's relaxing more, thanks God! A long night ahead I will leave at 9 A.M. To all the hospice companions and care givers whom give up their time for others. I am praying and thinking about you daily. We are keeping these humans from going to a nursing home. Our duty never stops it's giving quality outstanding care day and night. I love ((my job)) and honestly wouldn't want to do anything else. It's a privilege to work in this environment with elderly. It's my vocation and calling. Check in on Arlene and I... Keep us in your thoughts... #hospice#conpanion#watercolor#lifenurturer#eldercare#nursing#lifewellcaptured#livinghistory#diary#WeAreHeldTogetherByOneAnother#weareconnected#livestream#plasticeggs#painting
Our family said goodbye to the best guy today. My grandpa (our dear Papa Bob) passed away at hospice this Tuesday evening with my mom, her sister and my beautiful Grandma by his side. His whole family of amazing, strong women, holding him up in the last days of his life.
I’ll never forget how incredible it was to watch my family take such amazing care of one another during this time. All of our busy hamster wheels stopped for an entire two weeks to take care of one another. Little things, like meals, laughs between family, and fresh comfy clothes meant so much during this time. Such an awesome reminder that life’s smallest pleasures are truly what it’s all about.
Papa Bob was one of the most interesting people I’ve ever known. He was a highly intelligent scientist with an incredible sense of humor. At family functions, he was a blast to park yourself next to and buckle up for equal parts of hilarious one-liners and detailed conversation about the latest technology. I’ll never forget that he wore a child’s ring-o-link on his belt loop to hang his hat, and that he once drew a sad face with a Sharpie on a dent in his brand new car as if to say, “This sucks, but oh well.” He took life for the simple pleasure that it is — something that will resonate with me in the sharp parts of my own life where I want to scream and instead just chuckle, draw a sad face with a Sharpie and move on.
Papa Bob would have been proud to wear this “get well soon” necklace Sammy made for him while he was at the hospital. The necklace instead followed him to Hospice and, today, decorated his urn while we celebrated his wonderful life. Grandpa, you will be so deeply missed. 💜
What you may not know about me...I like scary movies if I can hide behind a pillow, I don’t like the feeling of falling meaning I don’t like amusement rides, I am 1/2 Japanese, 1/4 each of Italian and Polish, I work best under pressure, I am definitely a morning person and a night owl. #itsjustme#justanurseteachingoils
Next up in our Social Work Month feature is Abbey Peko-Spicer. She joined the Gilchrist Kids team in September after previously working as a social worker for an adult hospice program. She had this to share with us about her new role,
“I wanted to know the full range of hospice care and work with terminally-ill children. I’m overwhelmed by the amount of support these children and families have. They are often networked in with lots of different healthcare organizations – maybe their oncologist or a treating team – these are patients who can have concurrent care so that they do not have to forgo pediatric hospice services with Gilchrist Kids while they continue to pursue curative treatments like chemotherapy, for example. I love the job and especially the children and families I work with every day. I feel very lucky because the Gilchrist Kids team is full of so many incredible, compassionate people. It’s a real gift to do the work that we do.”

Beautiful and warm conversation with the owner of this hat about his relationship to death last night. His great grandparents died late in life, all of his grandparents are still living, and his parents are still vital. Yet he lives in constant awareness that his life could end at any moment! And from what I know of him so far, he’s making the moments count!!!! Thanks Berto! Happy Friday y’all!!!! #hereforagoodtime#friyay
PS I swear I’m fun at parties 🙃
